Slow copy from NAS to Apple Mac...

I connect to my NAS DS918+ via the Orbi RBK53S router. The Mac Mini M2 Pro only has the standard speed network port, not the 10Gig option. I connect to the NAS via SMB sharing (I have tried AFP - no difference in speed).
The NAS folder visibility is fine, permissions are fine.

However when looking to back up my forum (hosted on the NAS) to the Mac the file copy speed using Forklift seems incredibly slow. Forklift reports 48K a second, for a while and then it does speed up, but it does seem it should be much faster. However it takes around 12 minutes to back up 450Mb of data........

So any suggestions as to what I need to do to resolve the issue and speed things up?

There are many, many possible reasons for this, from bad cables/connectors, to SMB settings on one of the devices or the router.
Typically I do use blackmagic speedtest on the mac to debug. It at least standardizes the file size (impacts the copy speed as well).
A reset of network settings on the nas might help.

I thought that may be the case. I use top quality CAT8 network cables. I've re-made the connections to the NAS numerous times. I'll live with it for now I guess. Not a lot of free time at the moment.

Can you confirm the 450mb are decent sized files? if these are 1000s of php like small files it is always slow Because of access time.

If not, start with default SMB settings on the NAS and check the performance monitor if there is a bottleneck in one of the parameters.
Try to bypass the router to eliminate it as a problem (connect nas to mac 1:1 and copy same 450MB).

They are indeed very many small php type files.
I'll check out the other suggestions you made once we get back from holiday (we leave in the morning).... Thanks for the suggestions,
