I fired up my video edit machine to do a favor for someone. About 10 min in crash. Reboot, 5 min and crash, then 3….
This system is OLD. Started out maybe 2004, and was given a display card from MFG I was doing beta work for. At that time card was $$$, and software written to work with it. Unused display processors assist CPU’s now, so display card is much a main part of processing as CPU’s.
It’s the display card I think is dying. Decreasing time before crashes hints its dry heat sink compound. 2005 vintage could be that…. Or ……….
Note that in early operation with the custom software display card temps got high enough that card would shut down. Got around this by setting display fan at 100% at computer boot-up, another reason to suspect heat sink compound!!
Pull system apart - As long as I’m in… caps on motherboard look good (Supermicro)… pull display card.
Web shows me how to get into card. Do so.
With all covers off, Clean 20+ years of PCB ‘dust bunnies’, and yes, main NVIDIA CHIP compound is dry. MY! INVIDIA CHIP IS PHYSICALLY LARGE!!! Clean, clean, Clean!!
New heat sink compound. Put back together and back in system.
Well, it’s either gonna run or it’s not! I’m certainly not replacing the card or system. I only use system these days maybe twice a year now. Everything including software would have to be re-purchased. No, if it’s dead-it’s dead!
Shrugged shoulders, Hit power button, and waited…….
2+ hours later. It’s still running! Told it to render a Blue Ray Project to a new name to work it. Got warm enough the 6 computer fans to ramp up to max.
I’m amazed
it still works!
Gotta love a Supermicro System!!!
Later in evening ran it again for a half hour, testing a drive. No issues encountered!
