Started out with DS 215J... At the time I had a Linksys Router (BESFR something) with beta software, given to me by Linksys when I complained about an issue....
Shortly thereafter I upgraded to a Cisco/Linksys RVS4000 a small business router, with rudimentary packet sniffer.... That was a huge improvement, because it was GB rated... A couple Firmware and Packet sniffer updates were installed... I'm thinking I'm done, after added Linksys E2000 for WIFI access Point to RVS as an upgrade... But When Comcast gave a 40Mb/sec upgrade, discovered that packet sniffer limited connection to ~26Mb/sec.. So, in order to enjoy the speed increase to 40Mb/sec, I turned off packet sniffing. I wondered if this would have any repercussions.....
About 6 months later, after we retired and moved to different state, now on 100/10 service, (That the RVS was still passing without Packet Sniffer enabled), I discovered that 215J had locked out logins from a few countries! That is the day I learned about the default "3 Strikes & You Are OUT" rule in 215J...... That I did not know it was even there!!!

215J is BEHIND ROUTER.... !!!!!!!! How'd it 'get in' ????
At that point I knew I needed a new router.....
Liked DSM of 215J..... Heard that Synology had a new version 2600, and it was getting good reviews....
And I've been relatively happy since!
1. Yes there has been some bugs...
2. But, Overall, Synology is far more supportive on their products than Linksys was, and Cisco/Linksys Support would go out of their way to avoid assistance...
3. I'm self taught, and have learned far more with Synology Products, than with Linksys products...
4. Yes, there has been more 'hands on' actions with Synology Products than I expected.... But it's obvious that Synology is trying harder than other companies...
5. Regarding hands on --- A neighbor bought a 2600, I configured it for him and did one upgrade, and he has since decided not to do any subsequent upgrades..... and He is still happy as a "End User" ??
6. That Old E2000 ? It now resides in garage as wireless access point.... My own homemade MESH...
7. Learned the "hard way" about Ebay Cat6 cables.... & LED Tester not good enough... Bought Managed switch which had test routine, Documented all Cables and patch cords - replaced about 20... Then, and only then did I know the "bones" of the system here, was good!
Since 2600 I have purchased 3 other NAS's.... 718+ and 2x 720+'s.... and gave 215J (That is still operational today, with V6 DSM) to son-in-law!
The data is backed up via redundant data stored in multiple locations....
Most recently: Purchased 2x dead 2600's and made one out of two.... (2nd Now 'on line') This second unit allowed me to test things to get optimum operation out of TP and conserve (and re-purpose resources)..... And have a spare to test next firmware immediately, instead of waiting (As I'm doing with 2nd 720+ NAS)....
So, Yes... I'm critical of the company at times, but overall, compared to other companies.... Very Good.... $.02
