DS718+ renewed with two 8TB drives, Raid 1. Got the dreaded subject notice while attempting to install DNS 7.2. Then, I tried installing DNS 7.1 and 7.0, with the same result. I was about to write off the DS718+ but decided to try installing DNS 6.x before trashing it. It worked! Now, I plan to install versions forward, stepping through the DNS updates, until I arrive at version 7.2 on my DS718+.
While I also have a DS220+ and DS723+, I hated to simply abandon my perfectly good DS718+. Now I don't have to. Based on the many cries for help I've seen out there on this problem, not only with the DS718+ but also many other DS models, it seems worth posting my accidental fix. It seems likely that some or all of those problems might be resolved by merely installing the original the DS's original operating system first, rather than a later version.

We had a post yesterday, very similar to yours. When upgrading DSM it is imperative to follow the recommended upgrade path set by Synology. This is outlined for every DS unit on its Downloads page. If you try to jump ahead to the most recent DSM update, you will see the error you posted.

Yes. This seems to be a big issue lately, as starting to see alot of these coming in for service. And all the ones I got so far are from the update. And are stuck in limbo land. I actually suggest to all my customers. Not to update even to DSM7 if you can. As you lose alot with DSM7. And DSM 6.x.x has so many apps many still use. By the way. Good you have RAID 1. As all new NAS's sold since about 2018 don't support SHR. Synology dropped that a couple years ago. Another headache as many are on SHR. And your drives won't work in a non-shr NAS. SO better have a backup asap for anyone wanting to upgrade NAS's.
Plus your 718 has a common problem to this 1019+. This one bad boy chip that needs changing alot. ANd both use it.

What about 2022 models?2021? And how about those 2019 ones I mentioned. Not a smear at all. Are you the one getting calls for help? And I was talking about general public NAS. Not commercial grade. XS+ only. About the main 80% of their consumer NAS base.
Besides. Synology is the best NAS company out there. Why would you inject smear is unfounded. That is a helper when people decide to migrate. This way they have a backup solution in store.

Want to talk commercial grade? Best NAS they ever built was the RS18017xs+. I own a couple of them. Even a Rack FS series, as I deal alot on these. But nothing compares to this bad boy. Motherboards are tough too. And hard to break. And with 128Gigs of memory installed. Handles 4K compression like a toy. They never built better. I have 2 of these as my personals on top of the mountain I have. Even of motherboards. Still take this over anything newer. Like it was way to strong and drove the other models that would come later out of competition. It's my favorite in the product line up till today. And many Casinos have this installed. As I set them up prior. And not to mention, all Synology models are made for about 4 years. You can tell by the first 2 digits in the serial number that tells the year really made. Like this one starts with 18. So made in 2018, even though its model year is 2017. Those that are the last 2 digits of the model tell the model year. Like a DS1815+ is from 2015. DS1513+ from 2013 and so on. But you can find these 2017 models even with Serials starting with 2019. Or even 2020. So made in 2020. Again. Models generally are made for 4 years.

Update: I was finally able to install DNS 7.2 on my DS718+ by following the roadmap provided by Synology.com. This was a valuable lesson. Thank you, guys, for your comments.
