I installed Active Backup for Business to backup my Mac. After the initial backup, most backups only take a few minutes and transfer just a few dozen MB, which seems normal. However, from time to time, the backup takes several hours and transfers several hundreds of GB for no apparent reason. Is this a normal phenomenon, or is there a problem? Thank you for any insights.
 
Is this after a major OS change/update? What are the retention policies, versions settings etc?
 
No major OS updates. My settings are :
Hourly backup
keep all versions for one day
keep the last day version for 7 days
keep the last week version for 4 weeks
keep the last month version for 12 months
keep the last year version for 3 years
Keep the last 20 versions
 
Well depending how often the versions are being generated and the fact that you have 20 of them could mean that from time to time the rotation of versions is more intensive.

Your sig NAS is 216j, I'm guessing that is not the NAS in questions here? Whats the array setup where the backups are being stored?
 
Other than significant file updates on macOS, there are probably a couple of other reasons ABB takes a long time.
  1. The previous running of the task failed for some reason:
    1. Check logs in ABB server and client to see error codes. Sometimes the macOS security system is reported to be affecting a run.
    2. Time out: there's [I think] a three day elapse window to complete a task.
  2. Local ABB snapshots have been deleted / corrupted. Use Mac's Disk Manager to see snapshots on the internal storage.
These will cause a full backup to be run, even if the resulting changes in NAS storage are minimal. So those task runs will take a lot longer than the incremental runs.

And what can i do to avoid those problems?
 
Depends what is causing the task to take a long time to run. Can't you review what's happening? Such as don't shut down the Mac for over three days when the backup is running. The others are more tricky. I've tried deleting the ABB snapshots using Disk Manager. But before that you can look at the ABB server and client logs.
 
I'm not sure what you mean by "don't shut down the Mac for over three days when the backup is running". I almost never shut down my computer. When i don't use it, it's on sleep mode.
I tried to attached my logs but this forum's doesn't accept .csv files. So here it is apart of it (in french, sorry). Ther is two instances where the backup takes hours instead of a few minutes. The second instance, it fails a few times i think because i put my computer to sleep without knowing that there is a backup happening :

You do know that Google Translation exists, right? ;)
 
The time you want to be looking at is when the hourly task cannot run due to the task already running: "Warning... task is being processed."

What is happening then? Look at the ABB Client and ABB Server to see why the task is taking so long. There could be network congestion, NAS performance being consumed by other tasks. There might also be helpful logs in Mac's Console.

I gave up doing hourly Mac backups. My data is either already on the NAS or uses Drive to sync and version. I then do a daily ABB and, just for fun, Time Machine to an old NAS. Also, have a weekly full clone to SSD. Everyone's needs will vary, so you may need the more frequent restore points.

I don't think the problem is coming from another task. Because another task wouldn't make ABB displace hundreds of GB when normaly it only a few MB. It doesn't take time because it's suddenly slow, it takes times because it sudenly works a lot, like if it was the first backup.
 
Other than your task called 'Backup Mac' I can only see one instance of another task called 'Mac Backup'. So there looks to be only one task. But I didn't say another task gettingg in the way, I said cannot run due to the task already running. Meaning, this task cannot start a new run while its previous run is yet to complete.

What you need to do is focus on what's happening at this point.
 
Yes, when the task is more than one hour because it does a full backup instead of an incremental one, the log says that the task is already happening. But that's not the problem, that's a consequence of the task being a full backup instead of an incremental one.
 
The thing is, only you have access to you Mac, NAS, and network. So only you can really do any investigation (other than Synology Support logging on remotely). We can give pointers to where to look and what we would look for. But that's as far as it goes.

In Active Backup go to Activies and then Task History. Clicking a task event will display many more details for what happened during it. There is a similar access if you go to PC/Mac and then Task List. Select a task and click Details, now select Log. Some event with the box+arrow icon have more details.
 
i didn't know that i could double click on the task event to have more details. Thanks for the tip.
For the loooong tasks, it says "The system performs a full backup to free up storage space after rotating backup versions.". So that confirm what i suspected it does a full backup. But i don't understand why it need to do that for rotating the backup versions. i used Time Machine for years on my Mac, it does basically the same thing as ABB (but recovering a file could be realllllllly slow, that's why i've moved away from it) but i have never seen Time Machine having to do a full backup after the initial one to rotate the versions. So maybe it's just the way it is but it means that i need to have a way faster NAS (with 10Gbps interface) in order to be sure to cope with those full backups that happens every few days.
 
Maybe some of the rotated versions made a big difference (i.e read that as big hole) in the base versioning. I suspect that the full backup that ensues is more a revalidation; I don't see the storage used growing by a big chunk after these events. Just like Time Machine, ABB tasks can have a schedule that's not every hour. I found Time Machine on MacBook to be less reliable, especially with SMB to NAS, such that quite frequently I had to delete the TM backup and let the Mac start again.

I just checked and think the DS1813+ has four 1 GbE LAN ports like my DS1520+. If you have multiple client devices accessing the NAS then you might get better performance if you bonded two or more of those interfaces (LAG/LACP) so that they share one IP address. That's if you haven't already and the DS1813+ supports it (will be in Control Panel under Network / Network Interfaces). That would mean the clients would share N x 1 Gbps (max of 1 Gbps per client) for their NAS usage.

Other thoughts: are you running out of NAS space? Have you set a quota for the task's users, or for the shared folder? Basically something that is forcing the rotation. The three day window was a later update in ABB, before this the task had to complete in a much shorter timeframe. Could it be that ABB on the DS1813+ is stuck on a version that has a short window so that a forced full backup is invoked? The previous window used to catch people out on Friday afternoons!
 
I agree about Time Machine sometimes being not reliable, i had to delete my TM machine volumes quite some times.
Back to my NAS, my MacBook pro is the only client. I have 11 To of free space on my NAS. I have no quota for users. The ABB share folders has a quota but it's 3TB and for now it indicates that only 427 GB is used so i don't think that's the issue here.
 
Version of DSM and ABB? Are you on the latest supported by DS1813+, which I think would be DSM 7.1.1-69057-1 and ABB 2.7.0-13221. Clutching at straws here!

Have you upgraded the MBP to Sequoia? That might have some issues. There were plenty in the initial .0 release related to third party security / management applications.
