Question storage increase options

docker and VM will be affected yes considering they keep information on that created volume.
so yes it would essentially destroy most of it meaning it would be pretty much a rebuild.

You can backup your Docker containers from the WebUI (I don't use VMs so I'm of no help there).

i won't be going down that route, just too many things that could go wrong, and too many things to set back up again.

I am curious. Please bare with me. I love all that my DS218+ can do. But why not use a dedicated computer for Docker and VMs? I have a separate Linux machine for all my MySql, PHP coding. It's not that the NAS can't do it, but why not separate Docker and such to a machine of its own?

But why not use a dedicated computer for Docker and VMs?

because why use another system to do with when the NAS is more than capable of it?
i see no convincing argument to do such a thing.
