In Synology Drive admin, all items do not having versioning turned on; under the column for versions they all say none.

If I go into the version explorer button, I can go all the way back to 2022/2023 and I can see items from back then. Furthermore one particular folder doesn’t have a file in it at that timeframe, however when I set it to sometime after I added the file to the folder the file shows up under version explorer.

How is this possible?

Must have missed this topic at some point.

Are we talking about MyDrive or Teams folders? Or do you mean none of those have versioning turned on?

Is it possible that you had versions turned on at some point? Also the number of versions (the setting) will keep that number of each file before it starts to rotate it. Meaning if you had 8 versions as a setting for a file that had maybe 4 changes in the past 2 years it is no wonder that you can list all the way back to 2022.

The only explanation that I have off the top of my head is that at some point you had versioning active in Drive.

Both, nothing in drive has versioning turned on.

Versions was turned on in the early days but then turned off. The number of versions was usually set low, like total of 2 as an example. The rotation for versions was always set to keep it for 6 months and then rotate, which is where I’d expect that this would have been purged.

Taking a deeper look, I went back to 2022 and I can see that there are two out of 5 team folders that appear to be affected. I've set the versions to 1 on both of these shared folders, and set the rotations to 7 days which is the lowest setting, and then turned versioning off.

Looking at year 2023 in version explorer, I see the same two folders mentioned above and an additional one. Setting version explorer to the beginning of September 1, I am able to see updated files from within the year. Setting the version explorer to view yesterday and today I can see files that were just added yesterday, even though this whole time we've had versions off.

I am going to go through all folders and turn versions back on for 1 day and then set to rotate for 7 days. I will then go back through and turn it off to see if in version explorer it gets purged. Maybe due to having intelliversioing on in the past its not rotating properly, but even so it should have been deleted after 30 days (previous setting way in past) and I wouldn't expect to still see stuff in version explorer from 2022, 2023, beginning of 2024.

Lastly, I do see on the Drive admin console under overview, that on 8/31 there was 251gb of file versions, and on 9/1 that dropped to 315mb. On 9/21 that went to 315.5mb, even though versioning is turned off everywhere.

That still appears like it didn’t work. The log says all versions were deleted and the console shows only 320 something mb for file versions.

I would expect not to see anything in version explorer, especially that far back, but that’s not the case.
