Synology DS1823xs+ overview

Following the recent release of the new x23+ models, the DS723+ as well as its 4-bay version, the DS923+, now we got the successor of the 2021 8-bay. Here is the DS1823xs+.

Interesting catch - did not know that. Was that the first XS+ model that stopped supporting SHR?
none of the XS series support creating SHR arrays.

The only way to get SHR on them is to either migrate an existing array from a lower model, or edit a relatively simply text file in DSM to add back in support for SHR (essentially changing "support SHR" = FALSE to TRUE)

Interesting, that is good information to know. I'm not keen on editing system files as they would be overwritten when DSM upgrades and I would think this would also (possibly) void warranty.

ONE of the reasons its blocked is because SHR doenst work with HA - and most prosumers dont care about HA.

Another reason is because you get inconsistent performance across differnet parts of the volume, which is more noticeable with more disks (and with a more powerful processor and faster networking - so its more likely the disks are the bottleneck). example: if you had four large disks and four small disks in one SHR2 array, then some parts of your array would be reading off four drives, and some would be reading off all 8 drives, so it would be hard to predict the performance characteristics of the array as a whole.

It doesnt matter if the config file is subsequently overwritten because by then you have your SHR set up - SHR is supported and works on the XS , its just the part of the GUI for setting them up is intentionally hidden:

Synology support:
As of DSM 5.1-5004 it is no longer possible to create new SHR volumes on our xs/xs+ series units, existing SHR volumes may still be used and expanded however.
We removed the support primarily in part for the rebuild times that SHR would invoke due to being comprised of multiple arrays with the same disks. Additionally in higher-end production environments we recommend using High Availability for minimal downtime, and the High Availability mechanism doesn't support SHR.
However, you can migrate your current SHR volume to the DS3018xs, but you cannot create a new SHR volume on the DS3018xs.

the XS do support existing SHR, i.e. if you migrate from a lower model. they are just artifically blocked from creating SHR.

If you edit the file, set up your SHR, then even once the file reverts it doenst matter, DSM will still see and mount your SHR, you just wouldn't be able to create another. (say on an external JBOD) until you re-edited the file.

It worked fine on my DS36xx XS series box

similar instructions:

just add the following line to synoinfo.conf via ssh

cd etc.defaults

sudo vi synoinfo.conf

press i

paste the following EXACTLY as it is

support_syno_hybrid_raid ="yes"

and change the following to no

supportraidgroup="no"

You can place it anywhere or you can find the entry supportraid and paste it under there.

Once you pasted the entry hit "ESC" and then type :wq and hit enter and then restart your system and you will have shr and shr 2. Shouldn't matter what version of synology device you have.
