Quite the quandary. Synology recommends a minimum RAM of 1 GB for DSM 7.

The j-series are laggy-enough with v6, but v7 comes with a warning.

out of curiosity I upgraded my old ds416j - so 512mb ram and a lowly dual core armada cpu (makes the 4 core rtd1296 in the 220j seem speedy).

It’s only used nowdays to replicate my main NAS’s - so has zero apps installed, just smb and rsync services. Prior to the upgrade memory use was 170mb, after it’s about 210mb, so a bit higher but not enough to be significant. Performance wise there’s no real change - neither slower nor faster.

I suspect the ‘minimum 1gb ram for DSM7’ recommendation from Synology is just to be safe - if it’s JUST for storage 512mb is fine - if I went and loaded it up with surveillance station etc it would definitely run out (though running SS on the armada would probably also saturate the cpu)
