NAS Compares Video

Add to that: Surveillance Station also removed SS doing motion Detect! All of above plus this in use here, and Support just verified all would stop working…..just as I feared.

Actually:

Simplifies my life: I’m staying where I am. I will not upgrade!

This is a Downgrade, not an Upgrade!

For some time now I have been wondering whether a supplier is allowed to simply remove functionalities from the firmware of a device without consequences. After all, a consumer buys a device of a certain brand and type because it offers certain functionalities for which he/she pays with the purchase price. I am not a lawyer, but I sincerely wonder whether this is permitted under the legislation of for example the European Union (where I live).

The same thing that is happening now with the removal of the video codecs and the removal of Video Station, I experienced a few years ago when the USB drivers were removed from the DSM firmware. At that time, I had just bought a Synology DiskStation, partly to stream music via the USB port. I had only just got the device when the drivers in question were removed from the firmware with a DSM update.

I know that manufacturers often argue that it is a voluntary choice of the consumer to install (firmware) updates or not. But you also pay for keeping the system up-to-date, including its security. I do not think it is fair that consumers are given the choice between an up-to-date system in terms of security or a system with certain functionalities.

Maybe there is someone on this forum with some legal knowledge who could say something about this subject.

I’m calmed down.
Knowing that things work now, without upgrade — the way I want it to, makes me happy.
Knowing the multiple things that will cease working, if I upgrade, Before doing the upgrade — is simply marvelous! (To understand all correctly before proceeding in a direction that can’t be undone!). I sympathize with folks using video station. I don’t use it — but I feel your pain.

H265 going away & SS ceasing to do motion detect after upgrade are both deal breakers here. Both are presently in use on All 3 NAS’s. So to avoid both issues that I don’t want to lose, my only option is: DO Nothing!

Today I’ve made peace with that —Really!
Feature set in place now is known good and I accept that it will not ever change!

Even with me having an ‘Experimental’ NAS, purchased to use for testing of new programs, and operations, before installing on my main 2 NAS’s….. There is now no clear or even a fuzzy path to follow to overcome all the workflow and software & hardware changes necessary to adapt to the unwanted changes the Update would cause. In order to equate (with Update) to what is now presently working fine.

NOW…

That means: Router needs to be as secure as possible.

I understand the recent NAS Feature reduction was partially a cost cutting measure…..

Please, Synology!! Don’t do the same cost cutting on your next SRM Router update! I’m using many of the options you presently have available in the router.

I am not a lawyer but I will just quote the following:

That would be nice.... but Please return SS doing motion detect, too!!!

Mr. Bird: Legalities are one thing.... Short sided-ness is something altogether different!

I still see, and my conversations with Synology support says: H265 support in SS, DS CAM DS FILE will be removed by the update!

That is a good thing to hear. While I have always complained about VS being half baked, sunsetting it without even trying to replace it is not a good sign. They tout the functionality of the product, then suddenly stop supporting it.

Personally I agree with this and I think this x.x.2 version should have been a fix/security patch from the numbering standpoint. Depricating a platform/app without any previous notice is harsh and I do hope this recall will take effect. No hope of this happening on the whole 265 front, but at least it will give users time to reflect on the change and expect this to happen at some point with 7.3 or v8 when it arrives.
