Well, it’s official – Synology has launched themselves into the NAS storage media industry with the release of their HAT5300 range of HDDs. In a move that might not have surprised a huge number of people (given their progression into the server industry), arguably the biggest brand in NAS have unveiled their range of 3.5″ hard disk media for their systems.

I agree, not exactly enterprise grade.

But this is the concern - a simple form-factor change between DS and RS models already carries a price premium (and often a slightly lower spec) so we could see all 'RS' branded kit marked as business/enterprise and Synology vendor-locked to the max.

All my personal network kit is rack-mounted as it just makes sense to have it all together and all out of the way - especially when it comes to ethernet terminations, power and UPS requirements. Calling me 'enterprise' with any of my gear is so far-fetched that it may as well be Starship Enterprise.
