Synology Photos slow to load

Experience the same thing too. Photos slow to load on PC and on the phones. I have both android and iOS and it takes ages to load it's totally broken and unusable.

Photos work well on PC and Macbook;
Backups from mobile device (iOS and android) function across family members ok;
Album share works on PC and Macbook, relatively normally;
Album access on mobile devices only on wifi, never while on 5G away from home - which is most disappointing because that is predominantly why you want a cloud system to remote access to your albums while away from home to show others.

Gents,
when two apples aren’t same for two persons. Same is valid for single Syno App (pckg) which is running in diff environments based on:
CPU type first, then cores, then threads,…
RAM type first, frequency (based on the MoBo), then value
MoBo architecture
Storage setup (HDD, RAID,….)
Used FS
Other packages running in same time and their resources utilisation
And finally:
- amount of photos (1000 vs 20000)
- their size (16Mpx vs 50Mpx)

And all the defined features in Photo pckg.

So, info “it is running OK for me” is pointless. It has zero value for two people with two totally diff environments.
Specifically for the Syno photos what is a heavy eater of resources.
Then when you would like to help other use few details mentioned above.

It’s like comparison of Prius vs F150Raptor in heavy terrain. You can’t compare it blindly.

I have same problem too. you have to wait too much to open any folder or to scroll down/up on any pages. You need too much time to use this app. is it possible to work as fast as google pictures. I bought this NAS to use it instead of google pictures but now I'm so regretful...

I’m the last who is happy from the Photos heading. but from diff point of view.

You can’t claim that your Photos is running slowly. There is the simple and clear reason why:
- you have one of the low end NAS model
- this NAS contains CPU (core platform launched in 2012) with less power than you can find in standard smartphone now
- just 512MB RAM, what is also min. 8x less than in standard smartphone
- this weak horses need to run such heavy eating resources package as is the Photos.
And you can't compare the performance of Google pictures at all. In that case, you are limited by the speed of your WAN only.

I also understand that Synology should limit the functionality on such devices, even packages availability. It is not possible for a small child to be able to pull heavy toys. But profit first.

Like you said they have to limit the functionality of the "low end NAS models"
if they are introducing device as an alternate to google pictures, it have to support required minimum system efficiency!
And also it support up to 108 TB HDD but I am using only 200gb pictures at 4 tb hdd.
so there is some problem but I am sure it is not relevant who is using "low end NAS"
the performance of software should be increased.

unfortunately, you belong to a group of NAS owners who will believe everything that is written on vendor's website. And the people who put it on that site understand this tactic.
You can’t compare just a number of 200GB data stored in same NAS models. In one case, it could be 8 movies. Otherwise it may be 50k of 4MB files or 500k of 0.4MB files. In each of the cases, the NAS will perform dramatically different.

When more small files that need to be indexed, categorized into a database, ... the more CPU / RAM you need. Don’t mention about the MoBo performance. If there is running also a Face recognition, then it is soon to bake such NAS.
It is about basic physics.

This comes across as harsh. What should a first time purchaser do? How do they establish their unique needs and then pin-point the right solution?

When buying a car no-one looks at the speedometer and thinks that the top speed is the top of the dial. But there're a lot more cars that have been sold and a lot more buyers, of many many years. Experience abounds. But with NAS it's a lot more niche.

The issue with Synology Photos is that even the latest j-series aren't spec'ed sufficiently to run the based OS, DSM 7, let alone adding the CPU and RAM hungry replacements for the older packages (e.g. in this case Photo Station). If you are going to try to use a j-series then the best you can do is to just leave it to grind away, and don't try to use anything else in the meantime (no DSM web portal).

i don't have to know is the everything written on their website about nas true or false before buying !!! I'm buying NAS first time and choose this brand. As I know Synology is a good company around the others. But we are here to find some solution to our problems, this device introduced as I mentioned before to all buyers. So this is a problem for company to deal.

but you are only talking about buyers responsibility and other factors that may effect the nas performance !!

i have waited almost 3 months for indexing now it is done. it is so slow while opening indexed files...
if you have a solution please go ahead if you don't please don't talk about buyers...

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.

Synology's "marketing support" is based on quantity = they are unable to deliver (some) products in satisfactory quality.
And I understand that people will jump on it. This is the situation.

Unfortunately, not just in Synology. There were few vendors who can deliver what they have written on the web.

Therefore, it is very important to look for information on other sites before buying. Especially when the person in this segment is a newbie. That means not being caught on what the vendor promises.

I'm the last person to praise Synology strategy here

Ok you make yourself clear, you don't have any succession except not buying a Synology DS220j as alternate google pictures.

And unfortunately it is too late for me..... Any other successions please thanks ...

On the other side. Customers think that they can find the best price for such a device on the web, buy a NAS, unpack it at home and put it into operation. That's where the underestimation of the situation begins, where people are able to believe that the 200E box can handle thousands (even tens of thousands) of photos as fast as a big player like Google, which uses a huge infrastructure for this purpose. On HW, which corresponds to the level of smartphones from 2012.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. On the one hand, the greed of the vendors who give you anything. On the other hand, people blindly believe that the seller prefers the comfort of the customer to his profit.

Really the only thing would be to change to a more performant device. This is why mostly requests for 'which NAS' will get a 'start with a plus series device'... there are fewer disappointments with this route, though it means paying much more.

See my NAS journey ^^. The DS215j was much better than an Iomega ix2 I had, but this too soon got replaced when I really wanted to use the photos, video, and drive packages. The move to the DS1520+ was to get more space without shelling out for >16TB drives.

The DS215j still works as a Mac Time Machine destination. It could also work as a Hype Backup Vault 'server', but that's what my DS218+ is mostly doing.

After alot of research and reading umpteen reviews, the DS220J was hailed the homeserver of the century.

I also find myself in a similiar situation to fellow members who have posted above, the synology photo's is very slow to access, even when accessing from desktop computer that is on the same network.

I also found that some formats of videos for example were showing up as if the brightness was almost turned to 0. When I download this file and play it natively on my desktop via VLC player, it works just as it should. I installed Advance media package, which did not make a difference whatsoever.

What formats are best to use, photos and videos. Any tips as to the setup.

I have a 100mbs download speed and the DS220J is connected via a CAT6 ethernet cable. I have 2 x 12TB Seagate Ironwolf HDD's installed, using RAID 0 setup. DSM is active, although i have no idea what the benefit of it is. I recently set all this up and have an updated to the latest software on the DS220J.

My primary reason for buying this was so to move family photos and videos from google photos to synology server.
