First time I have had a Synology HAT5300 in my hands. The distributor in question said he had an initial batch that were all pre-sold, to which he added another 2 drives, the first of which went to the original customer having never touched his hands.
The one he was left with was a HAT5300 16GB model and looking at it is indistinguishable from the original Toshiba MG08 part number and actually includes the Toshiba part & serial numbers on the slightly tweaked white label on the drive itself. The plastic transit caddy just has Toshiba information on it. One thing noted by the original customer is that their batch did not include the UK conformity marking. The distributor also said that Synology UK had listed an 18GB version but this changed to an 'err... no' when the order was placed. This was just after launch though. Even at a price dropped to £579.99 (plus vat = £695.98) this last drive has not been sold [they are cheaper on Amazon at £620.47 at time of posting].
Still too expensive for me even as a curiosity item and the 16TB is a bit of an odd maximum size, with 18GB becoming the norm at the upper end.
So I went for the unadulterated Toshiba MG09 18TB for £299.99 inc vat. Same model of drive (MG09 vs 08 so slightly updated), with more capacity and at less than half the Synology price:
Drive details:
The Toshiba MG 18TB has performed flawlessly so far. It is fast, quiet and is the lowest wattage of any of my drives. When I say quiet there is zero perceivable noise when in my rack. My rack is enclosed and the fans are all set or replaced to run quiet but racks can sometimes amplify HDD noise such as seeks etc when compared to a desktop. But this drive added nothing - remarkable for a 7200rpm enterprise HDD.
I have 5.6TB on the drive so far and the overall capacity (once overheads and DSM7 is installed) is 16.4TB:
But yes, I did get the red text moaning about incompatibility when the drive was initialised. 'F*** Y** Synology' was my retort!
Otherwise it seems a very good drive and my first dip into microwave assisted HDDs.
