I have a lot of music that I purchased on-line and a lot I ripped from CDs I purchased. I would like to put them on my DS1621+. I not at all interested in all the info most music app have, I only want the tile and the artist to show. Does anyone know of a music app that will be these stripped-down and if so, how would I load it on to one of the HDs in the nas?

Hi Telso. I haven't tried any app yet so I'm looking and will check DS Audio. My DS1621+ will arrive in a couple of days and after I reformat the HDs out of my DS920+ I want to add music to the Movies and TV Show folders I have. I would use Plex, but much of my music doesn't fit Plex's stringent naming convention so I'm looking for an app I can load on the Synology and play on the TVs that are connected. I just want a simple app that will play the music without all the other stuff.

There is always the choice to either push (stream/UPnP) music to a device like your TV (Audio station can do that, even using the mobile UI, also in the community section there is Minimserver)
or
pull the music from the nas, using eg your smart TV player-functionality (in that case, only the music files ar on the NAS).

There are also hybrids pull-push on a phone or tablet, that pull the music from the NAS and stream it to the TV.

Depending on your preference, you can make your choice,

EAZ1964 I use Plex for video streaming of my existing videos (Movies and TV Shows). I want to add the ability to stream/play the hundred of songs I have in MP3 format from the synology to the TVs. My wife usually falls asleep listening to the TV and she would like to listen to the songs we have acquired over 30+ years. Many of the songs are foreign and there is no metadata for them. So what I'm looking for is an app/software that doesn't require the Plex stringent naming convention, that can be loaded on to my Synology and only requires a title and artist and none of the other stuff Plex and most music players require.

What is stringent? If you use random filenames and play by lucky-dip then I guess folders and file names like this are stringent:

Artist / Album / [Disc_num-]Track_num Name.extension

Doesn’t seem so stringent, especially if you don’t have any metadata. Anyway, this is how I have it working in Plex / Audio Station / other music apps.

The most basic way to play a file is Fike Station and DS file. Many file browsing apps will support audio playback.

Fredbert, many of the songs, especially the ones my wife likes have no metadata because they are from the Middle East so <Artist / Album / [Disc_num-]Track_num Name.extension> is stringent. Being in Arabic it almost impossible to find any on-line metadata for the recordings. What I have in many case is <World of Morteza Track01.mp3> from a ripped CD and nothing else. So trying to conform to <Artist / Album / [Disc_num-]Track_num Name.extension> is stringent to me. All I want Plex to require is Title and Artist none of the Album or disc/track number ie. <World of Morteza Track XX> <Morteza>. From many of the comments I see on-line lots of other people feel the same way and note the whole Plex concept of <album> and <disc number/track number> is so out dated with today's technology of buy single tracks on-line.

Audio Station's folder view might display files even when it hasn't found any media distinguishing data. If it can then DS audio should enable playing it. Likewise, if this is the case then maybe Media Server with a folder view in it's menu can provide access for UPnP/DLNA playback devices and apps. Failing that then File Station and DS file can play a selected media file, as can many mobile file browsing apps. If nothing else you could help yourself by at least organising your monolithic folder, that would then enable you to find a track rather than scrolling through them all each time.

The Plex structure I use is that was initially created by iTunes when I used that. I just pointed Plex at the music folder and it found, as did Audio Station and Media Server. You can also assign albums as compilations so that they are not attributed to an artist.

I'm sure there will be Windows programmes that can bulk rename media files, and even add metadata. Even if online metadata sources don't have a match it is usually possible to add your own. This is what I have done for some CDs that have been missing or too new.

A last idea would be an app / programme like VLC and access the NAS using one of its file sharing services, such as SMB (CIFS).

I have Plex installed on my backup NAS, but for some strange reason have issues with indexing and it not seeing my full music library. DS Audio works well for me, I like being able to download content directly to devices for playback when not connected to internet.
