Occasionally I get asked if I can recover data from failing portable hard disks, but as a Mac user, I'm finding data recovery tools are somewhat lacking for Apple Silicon and current MacOS.

I was wondering if there was something that may run on the NAS akin to ddrescue on Linux, or any disc cloning package that is able to handle read errors. Or even a Docker op[tion? Else I'll have to roll a Linux VM (even if thats likely the most powerful option...)

Just on the Mac front... does Disk Drill work? I do have a licence for the Pro level, from a software bundle, but decided I din't really need it running all the time so uninstalled it. This on Intel Macs running Catalina and Big Sur, so experience of M1 nor Monterey.

If you have an older Mac then a boot disk with an older macOS can be used for ad-hoc reasons. I do this with a small Mojave boot partition on my Mac Mini, so I can access the better Logitech Harmony application which is 32-bit.

I do use Onyx, somewhat limited but it is free.

You can also run the VM on the mac M1 and have a linux running to repair the disk.

If you don't have much data, cloud backup is a no-brainer. 300GB costs us about $1.50 a month on B2.

According to the info I've read, no apparently encryption and compression are completely separate options.
