Using HyperBackup to backup to another (older) NAS?

Is it possible to use HyperBackup on my DS923+ (DSM 7.2) to backup stuff to, let's say, a DS218play, running a lower DSM version?
I might be getting an older NAS for backup purposes but not sure if this will work?

Yes, as long as HB and HB vault are the same versions.

Ok, so this probably won't work since I'd be running different DSM versions which most likely means different HB versions...

HB is downloaded as a package and is not tightly linked to DSM.
Here at least I do offsite backup to a Ds415+ that had a different DSM version.

It will def work. I use a number of DSM7.x boxes and DSM 6.2.4 as targets using HB. It all works just fine.

Not necessarily. One can use mixed DSM 6/7 units successfully.

works in both ways (7.2 to 6.2.4 as well as 6.2.4 to 7.2) - I just tested it, no issues, even with beta versions of HB and HBV on the DSM 7.2 side

Do not understand your remark. I mentioned it is not DSM 6/7.
I warn for possible issues with differences in the HB apps versions.
I have had clear issues with up to date HB version on source system with the target system or more app versions behind.
Backup failed; it warned to update HB vault app on the target.
