It took me a while to finally stop using AFP, mostly due to nostalgia than any technical reason. Since Apple has been saying to use SMB for some years then this issue should, for most, be a trivial fix, i.e. disable AFP to force use of SMB v2 and higher.

Since SRM was only fixed in the last few days then I guess there's a thought process in Synology:
  1. Get people to migrate to DSM 7 by focusing resources there and get a pacth out quickly.
  2. Routers, while they can, really shouldn't be used for file serving... or we haven't the resources to work on it.
  3. Fix DSM 6 when we have resources and long enough to force those that would migrate to do so.

This. I get that v7 is now 98% of Syno focus, but still, covering critical elements should be delivered faster.

I do agree that AFP is maybe not high up the chain of priorities, but still. Saying that, most of my prod is on DSM6 still (and no plans to migrate any time soon) :D

It seems like a lot of the more advanced users are sticking to DSM 6 instead of updating to 7. This brings me to two questions:

Does this pose a security vulnerability?

What would be the pros and cons if any with staying or installing my new DS920+ with DSM 6 vs 7?

If you’re starting on a new NAS then I would suggest you use DSM 7. You will have to migrate at some point when Synology stops releasing security patches for DSM 6. You noticed it’s taken much longer to release this vulnerability patch for DSM 6, so you can infer from that how you like.

I’m not sure how you’re defining ‘experienced’ but here there are fewer and fewer questions specifically about DSM 6. I’m a home user and waited awhile to migrate and DSM 7 is solid now, well, as much as DSM 6 is.

I actually had an issue with Dsm 6 and photos, that is fully resolved with dsm 7 and synology photos. Once photos had the bare minimum of what I needed I made the switch. I have two locations and a friend all rolling dsm 7 and no issues what so ever.
