DSM Update Version: 7.1-42550

The words '(unofficial and unsupported)' stopped me dead. Plus I've been using DSM7 since August now so probably too much time has elapsed.

Links to 7.1 pre-release files seems to work now. Upgraded my DS116 from 7.0.1 to DSM 7.1-42550 and also rolled back to DSM 6.2.4. The downgrading procedure still works...

Thanks for the update.

Currently uploading the VirtualDSM pat file to VMM fails to create an image. It's been noted at The Other Place.

Bare metal DSM recovery via ABB will only work on selected models atm (young ones). Too bad I can't try this right now... not gonna push my PROD setup to beta stream no way.

Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM)

2.3.0-12151

What's New

  1. Full-system backup provides comprehensive protection for your Synology NAS including user data, system configurations, and packages.
  2. Multiple recovery methods including file/folder level and full-system level offers flexible recovery solutions for different needs.
  3. Block-level and incremental backup provides fast backup speed and efficient use of space.
  4. Change-block-tracking (CBT) technology intelligently tracks data changes to greatly reduce the time and computing resources needed for each backup task.
  5. Supports data deduplication and encrypted transfer to better utilize space used on the remote backup server and encrypted transfer for a safe connection.
Applied Model

Limitation

  • On a Synology High Availability cluster, users need to manually restart DSM after connecting Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM) to the backup server for the first time to apply backup settings.

But I do have one of those models incoming in a few days :D it will be an ideal candidate for this test.

Shame my RS1219+ seems to be missing off that list, my DS1019+ and RS3618xs are ok though. Especially as my RS1219+ is now powered off and is a emergency spare machine in case of disaster, so a restore ability at NAS level would be handy.

I tried downgrade with the guide mentioned awhile back but something "went wrong", sort of.. Not sure what it was but I had to go back to DSM 7 for some reason. I run quite a few apps if it was something about them perhaps...

Upgraded a NAS to DSM 7.1-42550 and then eagerly to see if Samba had been brought into the modern area, as promised by the Syno DSM7.1 video.

Nope, nothing, nada:

Code:
Rob@Dragon:~$ samba -V
Version 4.10.18
Rob@Dragon:~$ uname -a
Linux Dragon 3.10.108 #42550 SMP Wed Feb 16 16:59:36 CST 2022 armv7l GNU/Linux synology_armada38x_rs217
Rob@Dragon:~$

Still on Version 4.10.18. Nuts.

Many DSM7 packages do not run on DSM6, so the rollback procedure might hit some potholes on non-system and 3rd-party packages.

This harkens back to Synology's mantra of "good enough" 🤣

I tested again today. dsm 6 update to 7, update to 7.1, and then roll back to dsm 6. No problems at all.

For those who upgraded from 7.0.1-42218 to 7.1: Were any of your settings lost ? Reverse proxy, SSL certs, 2FA, etc.? I always dread doing the "upgrades" less because of bugs, and more because of lost settings, particularly since configuration backup has never backed up 100% of the settings.

No problems on 2 of my 7.0+ systems

No settings changed and no issues anywhere - not even my CLI changes or the various tweaks were disturbed.

My only disappointment is that all the feature enhancements Synology previewed also seem to be absent.

My update occurred fine on a DS214play and a DS415+
