DSM Update Version: 7.2.2-72803

While Synology will not come out with any official news on the VS debate and its resolution, I will say that VS will not be making it back into DSM. It will, as it was announced via 7.2.2 notes be flagged as EOL moving forward.

I got word of this a few hours ago.

As per Synology:

“Video Station was designed over 13 years ago to simplify the organization and local streaming of purchased media files. Since then we've seen more self-hosted video serving options appear in the market that offer a greater variety of features and these applications have become more favored by Synology users. Due to the greater functionality, popularity, and client support of these 3rd party solutions we are no longer offering Video Station.”

Well, I think there is a lot of truth to their statement they handled this poorly. The correct way would be to say:

“this product is now deprecated and will be removed in two years. Please make arrangements.”

Or something to that effect. Just yanking it, and making it incompatible, on a random .X.X update, just speaks of amateurism, indifference to the (home, soho, enthusiast) market, and a general lack of professionalism and care.

I will say that VS will not be making it back into DSM

I know there have already been 3 names tossed around.

What is a good alternative that is simplistic and basic. We have used video station to watch videos while away. We would download an offline copy to the tablet and the kids could watch on the plane as an example.

Rusty, Thank you for your diligence. I can pass this along:
It took me 9 separate replies. But I finally got enough information that IF all security cameras are using H264, as opposed to H265……

There will be no difference in perceived differences in: SS — OR — DS APPS: DS CAM, DS FILE in 7.2.2 compared to 7.2.1-5.

And— Motion Detection by Surveillance Station still will be available for all H264 cameras, within SS, in 7.2.2.

Though I changed most cameras to H265 a couple months ago, I’ve changed them all back to H264 now.

Seeing that I have a few tens of senior’s using DS CAM, Expecting them to adapt to something they have no idea what it is…… Is ludicrous !!
verification that this would continue to work without installing and becoming stuck is NOT AN OPTION!!
This, and others in past and future will always become a major sticking point, with prior to install questions about “What will Happen if” questions overloading Support when Release notes, and their associated “Other” documents are vague and in-specific compared to how YOU use the features! This leaves you with no solution other than to ask Support -- because you can't 'test' it -- and overload Support when they should be concentrating on New Release Support issues... This slows entire process down...
I don’t use Video Station, but my heart goes out to those who do, as this could be me in the future. And probably will. None of this is my, of the tens of seniors that presently use DS CAM to see if roads are clear…. Fault. It’s Synology’s !

Based on what I’m seeing and what I received from Support, and how long it took to get the answers to all the questions I asked. I’m treating this like first V7.
Wait for a dash update or two! 7.2.2-2
Again $.02, and I’m just the postman.

Rusty... With that said, I see mid August as creation date.. A week into September.. Have you been told, is 7.2.2 at it's final release version? Or is a dash version imminent?

Luckily this was confirmed by a number of users here on the forum that this will not be an issues. Regardless, glad you are confident now that the support has replied back with the same answer.

There will be no recall on 7.2.2, but as to when cumulative updates will arrive, I have no information on that front. It could be "next week", or it could be a few months.

Armed with Information here and Support. I loaded 7.2.2 on my "Experimental" 720+
Afterward checked things.... I can confirm:
7.2.2 sees and uses SATA SHR SSD's (not on supported list), 8GB Ram (not on supported list), SATA SSD in 3rd Party eSata enclosure (neither on supported list) -- All Correctly -- as it did in 7.2.1-5.
DS FILE, DS CAM (Local WIFI or LTE Data on iPhone) sees SD, HD, 4K H264 files correctly - Created after, and stored before the 7.2.2 upgrade.
SS sees H264 cameras, and selects SS as motion Detect source... and I see no difference in SS operation witth HD (1920x1080) cameras before or after 7.2.2 upgrade.... (No 4K cameras on this NAS).
I see no difference in DS FINDER operation on 2x units (718+ & a 720+) at: 7.2.1.-5 or 720+ at 7.2.2.
I see no problems with shared folder sync occurring in either direction: to or from: 7.2.2 to/from NAS's at 7.2.1-5
I see no problems with access to NAS from W7-64 computer. (W10PRO system not tried)
And I can still see SSD SMART Attributes in DS FINDER on drives in 7.2.2 NAS
letting it be for a few days..... (718+ is one many people use DS CAM on.... That remains at 7.2.1-5)

So basically Synology are saying, somebody came out with a better video app so we are just giving up.
I guess that means we'll soon see the death of Media Server, Calendar, Office, Chat, the list could be endless.
We already see better hardware elsewhere so why are they bothering at all.

Not the way I think business survive

Right. Whose to say synology photos is next on the chopping block too. I’m sure there’s third party apps out there that do way better of a job that photos. 🤷‍♂️

Sunset of certain apps is a normal life cycle. It happened before and it will happen in the future. The only problem with VS and 7.2.2 was the way they did it. Will apps evolve and be deprecated in the future, for sure.

Sure ever since I’ve been a synology user there have been app sunsets, but there has always a new app (Synology based) that came out to cover that specific area. With the sunset of VS this isn’t the case.

Maybe 3rd party is better, better quality/features etc. But if more items go 3rd party what’s the point of buying a Synology.

True, but in at least one instance they gave plenty of warning and didnt drop compatibility without notice. For Cloudstation version was depricated with clear warning they were moving to cloud drive. They gave at least 2 years of notice. For all I know the old version still may work with the current system.

In life it's often not what is said or done, but how it is said or done that begets problems.

Im on board with that for sure. Again, this was not the right way to handle things but I still think it will not continue this way. TBH they did leave us with options on the VS front, and while they could have made a replacement for it, or if nothing, a longer notice, it is what it is. I don't see it as a bad omen or as their new MO, but then again, time will tell.

If they had put top-level notices etc “Are you sure you want to proceed? Doing so will result in Video Station ceasing to work” in 72pt bold red font with sirens, then people who had not setup an alternative would be forewarned. But from what I saw the warning wasn’t even highlighted at the top of the notes.

People get attached to how they have things. VS isn’t the most reliable at tagging so manual intervention is required (at least the last time I did it). So I can appreciate that moving to a new solution will invoke some worries. It also can mean getting non-technical [family] users to learn new apps. Which then leads to having to defend the move imposed by Synology, take the flak, while seething away that it wasn’t your decision to do this in the first place.

I dl'd the updated version for 7.2.2 but it states it's only for the new DSM. Guess we'll wait and see!

You get an Update notification, not in 72pt bold red font with sirens..... ;) but, you must click the button OK before you can further with the update.❗
So you know what you are doing unless you don't read.

Sorry, it's in Dutch:
