Important Note

  1. After installing this update, you will not be able to downgrade to a previous DSM version.
  2. This update will restart your Synology NAS.
  3. Starting from this version, logs for drives will no longer appear in Storage Manager > HDD and will be available only in Log Center.
  4. Removed the "Automatically create port forwarding rules" option from QuickConnect advanced settings to increase network security.
  5. Users can now create a Btrfs volume of up to 1 PB on specific Synology NAS models. This update automatically converts existing volumes that use the Btrfs (Peta Volume) file system to Btrfs. However, to create a volume larger than 200 TB, a RAID 6 storage pool and at least 64 GB of system memory are still required.Learn more
  6. The maximum single volume size supported by RS2423+/RS2423RP+ has been adjusted to 200 TB (with a minimum system memory requirement of 32 GB).
  7. Starting from this version, Windows Server 2008 domains will no longer be supported. After installing this update, current Windows Server 2008 domains will be unavailable.
  8. For the models below, you can only download the upgrade patch from Synology Download Center because you won't receive notifications for this update on your DSM.

What’s New

  1. Added support for WriteOnce shared folders. This feature is based on the Write Once, Read Many (WORM) technology and can be enabled to prevent files from being modified, deleted, or renamed for a specified period.
  2. Added support for volume encryption. All volume encryption keys are stored in the Encryption Key Vault, which can be set up on a local Synology NAS or via KMIP on a remote Synology NAS.
  3. Added more Synology NAS models to support M.2 NVMe SSD storage pools. Learn more
  4. Added more Synology NAS models to support the M2D18 adapter card: RS822RP+, RS822+, RS1221RP+, and RS1221+.
  5. Added more SSD cache group management options, including changing the RAID type and replacing a drive.
  6. Added support for inline zero-block removal to increase the efficiency of data deduplication.
  7. Adjusted how drive information is presented in Storage Manager. Users can now quickly check the condition of their drives by looking at the "Drive Status" field.
  8. Users can now view the amount of used and free space for each storage pool and volume in Storage Manager.
  9. Added a warning notification for when the available shared folder quota is low.
  10. Supports deleting individual desktop notifications.
  11. Supports sending DSM notifications via additional webhook providers, including LINE and Microsoft Teams.
  12. Supports creating custom notification rules for system events, giving users greater control over what notifications to receive.
  13. Supports exporting a list of users and of groups.
  14. Added support for SAML to integrate DSM with external SSO servers.
  15. Added the option to allow non-admin users to safely eject USB devices.
  16. Users can now manually input the IP addresses or FQDNs of one or more domain controllers in the trusted domain. This allows Synology NAS to sync domain data directly with the specified domain controllers.
  17. Users can now enable Synology's email server to send DSM notifications directly to their Synology Account.

Limitation

  1. S.M.A.R.T. testing for M.2 NVMe SSDs is no longer supported.
  2. Starting from DSM 7.2 Beta, Virtual Machine Manager will no longer support creating clusters with older DSM versions. Please update each host in the cluster to the same DSM version or above versions for the Virtual Machine Manager cluster to operate properly.
Notes:

Has anyone installed yet? Any issues /stable?

I’m currently loading it on a vDSM however there’s a lot that cannot be tested since it needs to be installed directly on the device, such as the storage changes

Installed it on DS1019+ with custom RAM and NVME storage pool. Issues I had:
  • Storage pool disappeared, I needed to run GitHub - 007revad/Synology_HDD_db: Add your HDD, SSD and NVMe drives to your Synology's compatible drive database and reboot the NAS and then do an Online Assembly. Then everything worked.
  • As a surprise came that the package "Docker" was renamed to "ContainerManager" and thus required the change in my scripts to for example synopkgctl stop ContainerManager.
  • As I had all my packages installed on the NVME Storage Pool (/volume2) and the Storage Pool "disappeared" after upgrade, I needed to do the Online Assembly, then reboot, then uninstall "old" Docker and reinstall all packages to /volume2 again. I do not think that would happen with supported pools.

I don’t see an immediate need for the new features, but I’m always interested in the security updates!

I would be interested in Synology changing the non Synology 720+ M.2 caches to be used as storage.
So a change from HDD SHR to SSD SHR on a 720+ would be less painful that what I encountered on my experimental unit.

I could get away with trashing all data on experimental unit, but not my main 720+

Shame on them for not realizing they were walking users into a corner by removing mixed drives in V7!!!

Apart from the security updates, there's little point in updating for older devices (pre 20 series) as things like WORM and Immutable Snapshot are not implemented.
Probably the reason devices are on the "won't receive notifications" list is because there's very little in 7.2 for those units.

Have to agree with ‘apart from security updates’ but I did it on my DS218+ because:
  • Test update prior to my main NAS.
  • ’How many CVE!!’
  • Interested to see how Container Manager replaces Docker package
I installed the RC before this and don’t recall any issues. This time the update of previous Container Manager to latest couldn’t automatically remove the old one, I did it manually with no issues.

So far so good, but I’m not overly testing the packages. Quite liking Container Manager having better ability to update images and remove unused ones.

Container Manager sounds like a benefit but since I switched to docker compose I'm content where I am and prefer not to live through another of Synology's learning curves. See no advantage of this "update" for me.

As mentioned before…. I don’t plan on needing any of the benefits, (features) of 7.2, but will be more than happy for security improvements!!! 720+ & 718+. And bring on non synology M.2 volume permission for us with 2 drive + M.2 cache units! How else are we to do HDD to SSD SHR Upgrades?

I may try in 2 weeks on my experimental 720+. Doesn’t do anything out of ordinary, SSD SHR, 10GB ram, just SS, store stuff, and connect to iPhone apps: DS CAM, DS FILE, DS FINDER.

Did just your NVME storage pool disappear?
-- post merged: --

So do we think it is safe to install on my DS918+ ?
If that is a "production" box, I would not do so.

Did just your NVME storage pool disappear?
Yes. Was easy to fix as I explained.

More annoying was that between the previous 7.2 release and this update, they changed the file-structure for Docker to ContainerManager. Perhaps the upgrade did not work for me, because I have all packages on the NVME pool.

Can you confirm the version of Docker engine? Agree with general consensus, security updates are nice but also version of Docker is seriously outdated...
