Hey everybody. I finally setup the Synology VPN and can access it from the outside. Unfortunately, my Netgear routers upnp picked up the address plus others making my NAS open to everyone. If I disabled Upnp on the router and put the vpn port in the regular port forwarding, will that resolve this?

Also, when adding a user to my NAS, will I give them my VPN config or will they have to create their own. TIA

This is highly recommended. upnp is unsafe, and potentially it can lead to problems as the port might get closed (for whatever reason) when you need access from the outside.

Best to manually handle port forwards.

They will need access to the exported OVPN file provided by you.

Thank you. Any reason connecting to the nas from outside might be intermittent? Sometimes I can't get to the log in or it goes to my routers reset page instead, weird!

Upnp is the 1st thing that might come to mind. Do you have manually configured ports on your router or not?

OK, just got off of chat with my provider. They're saying the issue is at their and it will be fixed soon. Not sure the person I was talking to knows much. Is it possible for a provider to open/close ports or prevent my router from doing so, guessing here?

Ofc it is possible.

I just thought of something that makes no sense, at least to me. Ok, I can't connect on my phone using any browser over the cell network. But my vpn client connects every time which is on the dang phone. LOL, I think my mind is going!!

No VPN client setup on the router is "one for all", not SSID specific.
