Informational video.
From my standpoint: 6 vs 7:
Both worked fine, with exception of H265.

My reason for updating to 7, and again 7.2.2: (again assuming that no issues found with 7.2.2, And H265 is not taken into consideration in the equation):
Security Updates!
Being able to continue on with QC with DS FILE, DS CAM with SS.

I can’t think of one feature implemented in 7 that I’m using.

I’m certain I’m in the minority with my limited use of the product. But if I’m concerned and don’t use many features………..,

My short answer is no, but that’s just me
I have YET to upgrade to 7. Too scared for my plex and my apps I'm running on it.

I can't see that I'll ever upgrade.

Not sure I saw any practical benefit in any upgrades save one. Whole drive encryption. This is a compliance requirement. The previous encryption folder solution didn’t work for us as the shorter file names were a non starter.

I think Synology drive share folders increased the number of files that could be sync’d, but am not sure. The supposed 10x speed increase for it is something that never manifested itself for me.

The worm/immutable snapshots is a big add for those that use it. I’ve been meaning to see if I can find a policy to use immutable snapshots but still haven’t gotten around to it.

It’s weird that Synology just has not added feature parity for photo/videostation with quick connect and it’s beyond bizarre that converting photos for unsupported codecs is a “solution“. Any serious photographer will poop all over that as you just do not change original source matter to a different format than what you captured it in. That’s not a solution, that’s the company telling you to go F yourself. The heic H.265 formats are major formats. The company comes off as nonprofessional and purely not serious in having removed support for that. It’s beyond baffling and frankly insulting that they try to put forth any explanation for not supporting such major formats.

The rest seemed to be features I don’t really use or bug and security fixes which is nice. Save for the latest 7.2.2 downgrade, it’s mostly been positive in just making the box more resilient.

Is this really true? So with this recent 7.2.2 update you can no longer have HEIC photos, and they must be converted to jpg?

I don't use Synology photos ;)

A lot of misinformation going on. The article you linked does not say that those codecs are no longer supported and that all HEIC photos that come in now need to be converted to jpegs.

It’s unfortunate that others will interpret this stuff as such.

Hm

Wouldn’t your phone be able to view these photos, since the phone supports the codec?

Wouldn’t you be able to view it in the browser once the thumbnails have been generated and you have (at least for windows) the codec installed?
As a Apple-device only user I can confirm that everything works just fine. Via Macs or Phone app, upload heic and hevc files works with no issues at all.

On top of that once the files are uploaded, you can view them on any "non supported" device in original format. The whole point was that the thumbnails and processing of new files needs to be on a supported devices. Once the files are in the album, any device can view it just fine and with no need to use any additional Synology tools that were rolled out.

Synology 1.7 version via macOS Sonoma/Safari upload on HEIC files - no issues.

So if you view them not using the iPhone app and just on a web browser, you will see the HEIC image? And what about new HEIC files you add, will their thumbnails be generated and see-able on the webpage?

Or youre talking about the iPhone app DOWNLOADING the heic and generating on the iPhone, wasting space, time, bandwidth, and it still wont be viewable on the webpage.

I frankly find the synology iPhone apps are poop. Obviously for others they are great. But let's stop trying to whitewash what they've done. They removed HEIC from the NAS and if youre on the nav via web, as many if not most people are, this is an issue.

But perhaps I'm 'misinformed' on this, to which I would be delighted to be corrected.

So if you view them not using the iPhone app and just on a web browser, you will see the HEIC image?
Correct

And what about new HEIC files you add, will their thumbnails be generated and see-able on the webpage?
If done via a supported app and device. So if the device can't handle it you need all the addons that came with Synology photos 1.7. If the device by default supports HEIC/HEVC (like iPhone, or Mac via Safari for example), you do not need anything special. In fact anyone not reading the release notes will detect zero changes.

Or youre talking about the iPhone app DOWNLOADING the heic and generating on the iPhone, wasting space, time, bandwidth, and it still wont be viewable on the webpage.
No. I am talking about new upload of new images into Photos. So you have 50 new images making a fresh 50 thumbnails, all is done on device upon uploading and once executed the content is transferred into Photos and presented with all the metadata.

They removed HEIC from the NAS and if youre on the nav via web, as many if not most people are, this is an issue.
Incorrect. There is no issue as long as the device can handle the format. Then you will have no issues at all. I agree with you that most bulk operations would be done via a computer/browser and not the phone (I'm one of those users), and using a Mac ith Safari browser I haven't installed any new addons to work with Synology Photos in order to upload and greate new albums/folders. Again, if I didn't read the notes I would not be aware of any changes in terms of tasks now being handled by the client side, and not the NAS.

I have tested also this with a WIn10/Edge machine and ofc as expected addons were needed in order to process the thumbnails etc. But once the files have been processed by a compatible device, that same content is perfectly visible and usable with the said "incompatible" win10/edge client without any special addons at all. Tested it day one of the patch.

I would say that DSM 6.x was better from a stability standpoint. Updates to it were stable and no where near as buggy as DSM 7.x

I agree, DSM6 was the best Interface and more stable,

Can’t wait for comments when DSM8 starts rolling out. Ofc from those who will stay with Synology as a brand from that point forward. 😂
