Thanks for the welcome note!

I initially joined to find information on enabling SHR on the higher spec'd Xeon Synology boxes. I'm unclear as to why that feature wouldn't be available.

Welcome m8! That question is an interesting one and I guess not even Synology has no idea why. Still saying that my guess is that you probably won't use their custom raid type in a high-end box but stick to the conventional ones. But then again it is puzzling why its not there as an option.

A bit puzzling for sure. I'd think I'm not alone at wanting a higher end box with the SHR option.

I can only make an educated guess here: enterprises prefer reliability over flexibility. Hardware raid controllers are considered more robust and portable than "magic software raids".

Afaik, only the creation of SHR volumes is deactivated. Migrating existing SHR volumes from a different device should work out of the box.

It is possible to unlock the creation of SHR volumes:

Login in via ssh, become root, then edit /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf:
-- comment out or remove line: supportraidgroup="yes"
-- add line: support_syno_hybrid_raid ="yes"

Restart your device and be happy.

Frankly, I am uncertain if the Syno support is going to help in case anything goes south with such a SHR volume.

Thanks for the tips. I'll prolly wait to see if DSM 7 changes anything. If not, I'll most likely go with a plus series to get the SHR feature.

Any idea when DSM will drop? Seems to have been in development for ages!

Syno 2020 conference starts now in September. 1st Beta is expected then (or by the end of the year) and final release by Q1 end in 2020 (if nothing changes)
