What's the best way for me to use my two NASs?

I have a NAS at my home in Texas, and a second NAS in another state.

I'd like to use them to access the same files, aware that one can act as off-site backup for the other if necessary.

So what is the best way to do this?

I'm a newbie (I just signed up and posted in the Introductions thread), so I have no idea whether:

I should sync them together and access each NAS locally when I'm there.

Back one up to the other, and VPN into the primary NAS (but then I might be dependent on a distant Internet connection going down).

Use some other solution that I haven't thought of yet.

I'd be grateful for any guidance, and I'm looking forward to exploring this forum and learning more about my NAS,

Thanks,

Antoni

So what is the best way to do this?
To start off look into Hyper Backup and Drive Server packages.

One is a nas backup solution, the other is a sync platform (in short).

Those 2 will get you started just so you get yourself in the right direction.

Hey Rusty,

Thanks for the package recommendations.

What are your thoughts about implementing both packages, or is it better to choose one over the other?

Thanks,

The main thing here is to understand the difference between backup and sync.

You can ofc use both packages to cover different needs and type of access.

Another way to just keep the 2 nas in sync is by the method of using Folder Sync feature in the Control Panel.

Drive server is more of a user sync tool as opposed to folder sync feature and Hyper Backup is a nas backup (scheduled method) tool.

So it all comes down to what you want and need and the way you can implement those tools.

VPN is a separate topic and can be implemented with ease.

Thank you. That is the most helpful explanation so far!

There are certainly some folders I'd like to access locally in both locations, like streaming media. It seems like Folder Sync might be a good option for this.

And I'd also like to make sure that current work files are always up to date, whether I'm using VPN to access the remote server or sync'ing them. Again, Folder Sync might work well here.

The rest of the archive and storage can be backed up, since remote VPN access is fine for the occasional times I need to view those files. It seems like Hyper Backup would be the appropriate solution here.

Let me know what I'm getting wrong!

Thanks,
