Will compares Synology & UGreen (the end of Synology?)

Great review from Will as he shows Ugreens progress in appealing to home hobbiests while Syno moves on to SMB customers. As my DS2419+ hits the 5 year mark, its good to see this direction from Ugreen as potentially a viable migration path in the near future.

I’d be a little wary of UGreen at this point. Their roadmap for development has been toned down a lot. They did have surveillance on there at one point, but it’s now gone.

Still weighing my options for my next NAS, but not Synology.

I'm not buying anything from China Inc that touches sensitive data. It's not a matter of if, but when you will be compromised, IMO.

Fully get that. I’m considering the UNAS as I will only use gig lan connection for my needs. The only thing putting me off is time, as a musician and a YouTube creator there’s not a lot left for tinkering. Synology gave me a nice easy option.

Seeing that I've intentionally put the most apps on my weakest NAS (718+) This lets me compare systems easily.... (7200 rpm drives on 718+ & one 720+ & R/W Cache, SSD on 2nd 720+ & R/W Cache: This allows me to compare apples & 2 different types of oranges!!) Same applies to RAM: (718+=6GB, One 720+(7200rpm)=6GB, Other 720+(SSD)=10GB.
And things are still working fine....... 718+ is NOT out of breath!!!

From a previous NAS (215J DSM V6), I've seen what happens - when a NAS runs out of breath!!!

I know I can, in the future, if 718+ becomes overloaded and can't 'keep up', I can move my High Workload Apps to a more powerful NAS -- Either 720+, 7200RPM/6GB or SSD/10GB......

So.... That is my "Canary in the Coal-Mine" Scenario.....

As mentioned before, I have a spare Synology 720+ Power Supply on the shelf: Ebay supply with greater specifications is on a 720+, allowing for a 2 month old Synology supply as spare for Any NAS I have:

My Plan: Run what works as absolutely as long as possible!!! Let all the other MFG's upgrade their systems..... and If and When these get 'Long on the Tooth'.....
All others will be better than they are now! ===== "DO NOTHING - NOW!" $.02

The most interesting thing I got from that video... UGREEN allows for other OS's to be loaded on their hardware!
Years from now this might become the most important thing to consider, as everything improves greatly - A Marriage of the best Hardware & Software! (Thank You, Mr. T!)

Well UNAS is off the list for now. No UPS support unless you get all hacky with NUT. More worryingly, no fan control, a number of reports of folks trying to control it by SSH of all things, then the change being overridden by the software 🤷‍♂️

also happened to overlook the fan comment
Oh ... That someone here is a Synology fan boi ? :ROFLMAO: Otherwise the fan comment is equally xaggerated and out of context.

BT W, setting up a Synology as a NUT client is THE hacky process... The most inane of all my NUT clients. Sad that Synology chose to use a dumbed down (and outdated) NUT server/client configuration. There are many threads in this forum that detail this mess.

No, didn’t say you were a fan. I said that the UNAS has no fan control. Please read properly before throwing accusations.

I said that the UNAS has no fan control.
Again, you are wrong. Rather than making accusations you do not understand, about a unit with which you have no experience, stick with fact, instead of disingenuous nay saying.

Like I said. UNAS shows promise, but it is very early days. I have little doubt they will add fan control and other needed things. The 3.0 update finally brought storage pools and other basics. Again, my guess is 1-2 years for it to 'get there' for folks that need more than (slow) basic SMB access.

That said, it's concerning their design seems to cook drives unless the fans are going pretty well. I wonder if people in those threads have hostile environments. I personally havent had the extreme temperatures they report, however, my UNAS is basically on vacation doing mile Time Machine backups. Perhaps they are more heavy users.

UNAS Pro speed control is easier than Synology's. It is manageable, even through the touchscreen (can Synology do that)?

Your linked post is a feature request. It would equally apply to Synology, UGreen ... and probably to all major NAS providers.

Please move your red herring to a new thread. If I read correctly, this thread is about Synology & UGreen.

Well now girls... and boys... what is going on here? Can't a moderator take a day off without active members starting to make trouble? Tsk tsk...

Stick to the topic, or we will delete the thread with a 2-week cooling period for all involved.

Thank you in advance for being cool, and enjoy the rest of the discussion constructively. If there is a need to open a separate discussion topic(s) about other brands, you are ofc welcome to do so.
