Hello everyone,
My name is Dion Houston, I'm from the Seattle area (Lynnwood for those familiar).
I retired from the Army about a year ago, and came back to care for my parents. Recently, I inherited a DS415+ that my Dad had been running for a good number of years - 4x 10TB drives. Quite an impressive setup! Dad used it primarily for media storage... A lot of different movies and music on it. I've expanded by putting a bunch of photos, more music, and TimeMachine backups.
Even though I come from a software engineering and other technical background, I had a limited understanding of NAS. I thought it was primarily a RAID appliance. I see that they are bonafide servers in their own right. I'll write on another forum, but my primary interest is in "improving the foxhole" - specifically photography workflow to reduce my dependency on cloud services, building media services that work across all my devices (Plex is bringing me largely there!), and infrastructure improvement (system backups, using the NAS as a router?, frankly I don't know what I don't know).
