Recently I purchased two WD Pro NAS harddrives, each with capacity of 18 Tb. They were purchased to install existing WD 6TB ones. After I installed both of them, one of them would not initiate and generate error (model WD181KFGX-3PCKWN0 aka WD181KFGX-68CKWN0 ). NAS is Synology, with the latest software installed (DSM 7.0.1-42218, Model DS-920+). I swapped the two hard drivers and the faulty one still generates the same error. Both hardrives have the same Firmware version 83.00A83

Welcome.

Sounds like a bad drive. Replace it and try with a new one.

I always test all new drives prior to placing it in service where it was bought for.
Yes, it takes longer before it/they are finally at location where it’s intended to go, but if it passes you know it’s good, and if fail- you avoid what you encountered….. not knowing what exactly which or how many are bad.

Team, thanks a lot. It sounded to me like a bad drive to. I bought on Amazon from WD as part of the offer, so paid 360 USD per drive. I plugged it to my PC but the same results, except loud clicking. The drive is not visible even on WD tool. I dont know how they ship them and what kind of QA/QC WesternDigital has these days.

I had to deal with extremly rude Amazon leadership team member "Diljeet" but at the end the driver is going back. I am thinking of switchnig to a different manufacturer. I have two Seagate drives, one WD Pro and one WD Plus. I think I will replace smaller WD Plus with Toshiba one. Diljeet kind of turned me off to deal with WD again.
