Everything you need to know about Upgrading Synology NAS Memory Generally speaking, Synology NAS has a long-standing reputation for being underpowered when compared to brands like QNAP and Asustor, at least out of the box, choosing to focus on their award-winning DSM software. This is changing a bit in 2019/2020 with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. Today’s post will cover my thoughts on the usefulness of upgrading the factory-installed RAM, how to determine if a RAM upgrade is needed at all...
It’s a great thing to be able to manage all of your self-hosted applications from one dashboard. DashMachine makes this not only easy but also pleasing to the eyes! With this application you can bookmark and have easy access to your apps with icons for quick reference. Ever wanted to test out how fast your site was? Then you probably heard of JMeter? Well, today I would like to turn your attention to an open-source platform that’s not running in a UI under Java (?!?!) but rather from the command line. The best part is, your can Docker it. Loadimpact is now k6 If you ever needed or wanted to run any type of smoke, soak, or stress tests, you probably heard of Loadimpact.com. Well, they have decided to rebrand as k6 Cloud. Still, as much as you can use their services from their cloud, you can use the complete solutions and pull it from GitHub if you want to run it locally. If you are more like me, and running in Docker would be your choice, then just pull this image from Docker Hub. So what is this...
I was hesitant to write about this application because it is no longer in development but I love it so much that I just had to. It works very well and looks amazing too. I really hope someone picks up this project soon. With that being said, here’s why I use it. I actually use File Browser on my Synology NAS over the DS File app. The DS File app would work fine but it’s missing one key feature I really needed. It does not allow you to rename files within the app! If it does, they have a very good way of hiding how to do it. Continue reading...
Choosing the Best 2-Bay Synology NAS Drive Choosing the best NAS drive for your needs can often be a difficult or imposing job. Network Attached Storage has evolved a lot over the years to a point now where they are less like basic storage devices and more like fully functioning computers, with operating systems, applications and a complete graphical user interface. Synology NAS has been in the business of producing NAS solutions for a number of years and in the field of desktop 2 drive (hard drive or solid-state drive) NAS systems, they are pretty well established as a reliable, user-friendly and fully featured brand provider. With an impressive selection of 2-Bay NAS solutions currently available in their 2018-2020 range of devices...
Almost a year ago I wrote on how to setup Grafana via Docker on your Synology NAS using a popular GIT configuration (Grafana + InfluxDB + Telegraf). In that same article I haven’t posted any pictures or dashboards that I use daily. Many things have changed in the past year regarding my Grafana usage but for the most part I use custom defined dashboards that show what matters to me most at any given time. True, some dashboards that people use require a lot of time and effort to setup, certain steps that might include multiple sources, multiple variables and in the end they get an awesome looking dash. For me, in the future, I can imagine that this will be less needed if Synology DSM 7 Active Insight feature will work as intended. But...
Comparing the Synology DS220+ vs the DS218+ NAS Drive Choosing to buy a NAS drive can often be be a tricky investment choice to make. Although the development of network-attached storage in 2020 has far outgrown the rather simplistic ideas of it being a brainless hard drive you can access by the network or internet, growing into a complete and unique operating system comparable to those found on desktop or mobile platforms, it still constitutes a difficult choice for those new to this kind of hardware. Even if you are going for basic NAS hardware for storing and backing up data for your friends, family or work colleagues, you are still going to need to spend a few hundred Pounds, Dollars or Euros in order to get the right piece of kit...
The Synology DS920+ 4-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review When the new Synology Diskstation series was revealed a few weeks ago, I think it was safe to say that it got peoples attention! The previous 18+ series of NAS had been around since September 2017 and many users were starting to get worried about choosing the older generation or holding out for a brand new announcement of something bigger and better to come. During this time, the unit that seemed to get the most mention, was the DS920+, a follow up to the remarkably popular DS918+ (possibly one of the most popular diskstation NAS they have ever put out) and one that provides a fantastic balance of hardware on day 1, upgradability down the line and excellent access to the award-winning...
Synology M2D20 NVMe SSD Card Coming Soon The last month or so has been an absolute landslide of new release information for Synology, generally a frightfully tight-lipped company. From the announcement and release (in Japan at least) of the DS920+, DS720+, DS420+ and DS220+, to the impending arrival of the Synology E10M20-T1 and those Synology Brand SSDs, one particular hardware release almost passed by, the Synology M2D20 NVMe SSD Cache card, for upgrading your PCIe enabled NAS for vastly improved IOPs and file handling internally. This is not the first time that Synology has introduced this kind of technology to us, as its predecessor was the M2D18 – Near enough identical in a practical sense, but using a lower generation PCIe...
In this short article, I would like to focus on Plex and LIFX integration using webhooks. In case you are not familiar with webhooks, it is a method that allows you to alter the behavior of a web page (or service) with an HTTP callback. More info here: Webhook - Wikipedia In case that you own some LIFX hardware (lights, stripes, etc…) and you want to automate them while using your Plex media platform, well there is a way to make that happen. All credits go to philosowaffle philosowaffle/plex-lifx-webhook for making a Python script that makes all of this happen. Continue reading...
Comparing the Synology DS720+ vs the QNAP TS-253D NAS Drive Trying to buy the best 2-bay network-attached storage (NAS) drive used to be so simple. Just over a decade ago, NAS was (for the most part) a glorified hard drive that you access over the network or internet that you and your PC software could connect to in a very basic way. Fast forward to 2020 and NAS has become a completely independent piece of computing technology that arrives with its own operating system, it’s own multitude of applications and has in many instances moved from being the client device, to being the host! As technology moves forward and demand increases, the average buyer sticking points have not changed a whole lot and even in 2020, most home or SMB users...
