Synology DS1821+ NAS – Unofficial 32GB & 64GB Memory Upgrade Walkthrough
How to Upgrade the RAM in your Synology DS1821+ to 32GB and 64GB RAM Unofficially Back in Autumn 2020, when the Synology DS1821+ was first released, many users were surprised at the maximum memory an type of locked limit that the manufacturers stated on the specifications – 32GB of ECC DDR4 to be precise (spread over 2 SODIMM slots, with a primary slot occupied with an official Synology 2400Mhz 4GB DDR4 Module). With the AMD Ryzen V1500B 4-Core chip that the Synology DS1821+ arrives with, it did seem odd that the only Error Code Correction memory should be used (ECC is nice but quite industry-specific) and only 4GB of DDR4 memory arrived by default (same as the DS920+ and DS1621+) for this chip was listed firmly in the specification to...
Are NAS Drives Safe? Can You Trust Them With Your Data?
Can You Trust and Rely on a NAS Drive for Your Data in 2021? These days one of the most important things that we all strive to keep safe and sound is our data. The world has shifted towards a heavily data-influenced society and whether you like it or not, your data is valuable, vital to you and therefore needs to be protected. Over the years we have seen two very clear methods of ensuring your data is safe, namely those of utilizing internet-based cloud services (such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and more), or using privately owned storage methods such as USB drives, localized PC storage and of course network-attached storage (NAS). Almost all of the previously mentioned storage methods are familiar to most home and business...
SMR, CMR and PMR NAS Hard Drives- A Buyers Guide 2021
A Guide to CMR/PMR and SMR drives in 2021 – Should You Buy Them? Remember when buying a hard drive was simple? The technology behind hard drives has existed for decades and it is only really in the last 10 or so years that the formula for how hard drives store data has changed substantially. Just over a year ago, Western Digital got into all manner of trouble with hard drive buyers when it was announced that a number of their popular range of NAS server hard drives featured a variant of shingled magnetic recording, (know more commonly as SMR). I say a version, as there are indeed several different ways that a hard drive can implement SMR architecture internally, with the two more common branches being Drive Managed (DM-SMR, which is...
Disaster recovery using Snapshot & Replication (Bitwarden scenario using Docker)
About a year ago, I have written an article on one of Synology's great apps, the Snapshot and Replication tool. DR - disaster recovery SR - Snapshot and Replication BW - BitWarden In this article, I would like to focus on a specific disaster (DR) test when it comes to using the SR tool, recovering your BitWarden server running in Docker. Any service that is important for you or your business needs to have the maximum uptime possible, but from time to time there might be problems that will prevent you to use that service. If that problem as a result will prevent you from using that service how it is currently configured, you might have to do a DR switch. If you are hosting your own BW platform for yourself, your business, or maybe...
Synology RS1221+ NAS – 32GB & 64GB Unofficial Memory Upgrade Step By Step Guide

DSM 7 to DSM 6 downgrade (unofficial and unsupported)
If you are not familiar with Synology and their DSM OS it would be good to know that when it comes to updates, there is only one official way, forward. Meaning you can't downgrade DSM back to previous versions. Now, this is not entirely true as there was an unofficial way to downgrade that is still valid but I can't stress enough how much this is NOT officially supported, and that you should do this only if absolutely necessary. Reasons to Switch from Cloud to NAS Drives
Quitting the Cloud – Are You Ready for NAS? Let’s all be honest for a second – google services are actually pretty bloody good! From the ease and carefree use of GMAIL and Google Docs to exchange messages and documents, to the sharing of videos on YouTube and relative ease of Google Drive – it is also convenient! Making the move away from public cloud services such as Google Cloud, OneDrive and DropBox is actually something that we don’t really consider, as we take for granted that these services are always just ‘there’ when we need them. In fact, unless you are a business owner who needs ultimate control and privacy of their data, or someone who needs their data accessible over the network (not the internet), most users cannot...
Synology DS1621+ vs QNAP TS-673A NAS Drive Comparison
The Synology DS1621+ vs QNAP TS-673A NAS Compared The choice for businesses that are making the move away from third-party cloud services, or those looking to add a NAS to the existing multi-tier data strategy, has never been larger than in 2021. Right now, for businesses looking at a reliable desktop solution to wrap their business data around it’s pretty exhaustive, with many brands and hundreds of distinct solutions all vying for your money. Two brands that have maintained a comfortable dominance in this SMB tier of the storage industry are Synology and QNAP, so today I want to take a closer look at their two respective 6-bay NAS solutions, the Synology DS1621+ and QNAP TS-673A. Each one providing the full range of software services...

How to Upgrade the RAM in your Synology DS1621xs+ to 32GB and 64GB RAM Unofficially Back in Autumn 2020, when the Synology DS1621xs+ was first released, many users were surprised at the maximum memory an type of locked limit that the manufacturers stated on the specifications – 32GB of ECC DDR4 to be precise (spread over 2 SODIMM slots, with a primary slot occupied with an official Synology 2400Mhz 8GB DDR4 Module). With the Intel Xeon D-1527 4-Core chip that the Synology DS1621xs+ arrives with, it did seem odd that the only Error Code Correction memory should be used (ECC is nice but quite industry-specific) and only 8GB of DDR4 memory arrived by default (Double that of other popular diskstation solutions, such as the DS1621+, DS920+...
Is your data safe? World backup day 2021
Every year March 31st is #WorldBackupDay. In case you are unaware, this is the day that you should backup your data if you haven't already (shame on you!). Of course, you should have regular backups of all your crucial content, but just in case, if you forgot, go and do it now. How do you backup your data? So how do you backup your data? Daily, weekly, monthly, all of the above? Multiple copies, multiple locations, off-site, cloud? You do know that your backup needs to have a backup as well, right? Would like to point out some articles on this blog regarding NAS backup, apps that can be used for those scenarios as well as some methods that include 3rd party cloud backup as an ultimate disaster scenario.
