Active Backup for Microsoft 365 and DR scenarios
A little over a year ago I wrote about Synology's Active Backup tool, Active Backup for Business. Their lineup of AB packages includes a total of three options. Microsoft/Office 365, Gdrive, and Business. In this article, which was a while on the back burner, I will focus on Active Backup for Microsoft 365 (also known as Office 365 up until a while ago). With more and more users and businesses focusing on their work using the "cloud" providers such as Microsoft with their Office 365, and the COVID-19 pushing more and more people from on-premise to their homes, it is no wonder that O365 packages are becoming more interesting. However, saying this, are you aware that O365 does not include a backup strategy? Some models do include some...
DSM 7 - 41222 public beta upgrade and new features
Yesterday was an exciting day for Synology. We have got our first DSM 7 public beta after three months of public preview and over 2,5y since the initial announcement of DSM 7. I have been running the public preview version since day one and have had no problems at all. The NAS was stable and running fine with no major problems (apart from the volume degradation at one point, but that was just the old drive dying), so today I have updated to DSM 7 41222 version (public beta). Let's how that went! Continue reading...
Synology 2021 – Focus on DSM 7
Synology NAS – What They Have In Store for 2021 Synology made the shift to digital for the annual reveal of their plans for the year to come and it became abundantly clear from the outset that they had users attention – given the fact the page link overloaded for many almost immediately! Synology has been a brand that is heavily ‘Apple’ stylized and their annual worldwide events have very much maintained that vibe. This recent shift to the digital (for obvious, pandemic reasons), although informative, certainly lacked the hardware coverage that we have come to expect at these events in previous years, shifting the focus far, FAR more towards software. Not just anyway software though, the presentations were focused on Diskstation...
DSM 7 - Office and Drive Server 3
Synology Office and Drive services are one of the most common apps used by all Synology users. Formally Synology had all these apps as separate packages but over the years they have merged into one (well two) app. Document, Slides, and Spreadsheet apps are already part of a package called Office, and to make things even more interesting once you install you will access it via the Synology Drive app. This might be confusing at first but that's how the setup has been configured and this is not a DSM7 change at all, in case you don't use Office at the moment, but do use Drive (Dropbox alternative). Whats new and different with Office and Drive in DSM7? There are not many groundbreaking changes in these two apps but there are a few...
DSM 7 - NAS OS for the modern age
Since Dec 31th 2019 when Synology first announced DSM 7 preview, much has changed. On Sep 8th, 2020 we had hands-on with the first version of DSM7, and already then it was stable. Initial upgrades and user feedbacks were very positive. So what does this new version of Disk Station Manager (DSM) brings to the table? In this article, I will do an overview of DSM and it's changes as well as name a few features that stand out. The following articles will focus on some specific (new) features that Synology developed as well as some other well-known ones that have changed in more than one way. Continue reading...
DSM 7 - Upgrade from DSM 6 to the new version
In my general DSM7 article you can feel how excited I was about the new version of DSM. Still, going with the new version of any OS on your production device is no small feat. Is jump to DSM7 justified? Is this something that you should do? Can you go back? Let's see. Upgrade process First question. Do you have a valid backup of your data? No? Shame on you! Do it and then come back. Yes? Nice one, you can proceed. Like with any version of DSM upgrade to DSM7, at the moment, will require you to download the specific version for your NAS and install it manually using the Control Panel > Update and Restore section. There you will see a Manual DSM update button. Use it to initiate an upload of your DSM7 install and then the installation...
DSM 7 - Synology Secure SignIn
The new version of DSM 7 will bring a lot of features and some of them will be more visible to the end-user, some will not. The new Secure SignIn is one of those front and center features that will elevate your NAS security by use of a new mobile app for authentification. Security nowadays is really important and accessing your NAS from the Internet is always a risk no matter how much you try and protect it. With this in mind, we have got yet another option to help us get to our device more securely. Enter Secure SignIn. Continue reading...
DSM 7 - Configuration backup and restore
If I have to point out one single thing that I like about DSM7 it would be this. If you were in a situation that you have to restore or backup some settings to have them ready, you would find out soon that not all settings in DSM are backed up. Well, DSM7 has put an end to this. With the new Configuration backup and restore options you will be able to snapshot your DSM settings (this does not include your Apps or data, those have to back up via Hyper Backup for example) so you can have them at hand whenever you need. To make things better you can back them up to your Synology Account, and restore one NAS settings on a completely different NAS! Now, this is great as I'm sure some of you out there were in a situation that you had to...
The future for data management, hybrid-cloud, and more
Synology introduced an entirely redesigned DiskStation Manager (DSM) in the online event, 2021 AND BEYOND. DSM is the unified operating system powering Synology data management solutions, and version 7.0 brings new technologies for storage, backup, and hybrid cloud. “Unprecedented quantities of data have undergone processing, whether for data analytics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, telemedicine, […] Continue reading... - - - Source: blog.synology.com
Best Surveillance NAS Drive of the Year
Choosing the Best Surveillance NAS Drive of 2020 When you consider investing in a NAS drive in your home or business environment, you always want to maximize your investment in this new kind of technology. Systems are designed to do many different things at once and each top tier NAS brand includes a complete software and application environment with their hardware, allowing you to support multiple different services at any given time. The most popular services that new buyers tend to choose are that of multi-tiered backups, multimedia playback, shared drives for collaboration and, of course, surveillance. Utilising a NAS system as a bespoke and highly proficient NVR (network video recorder) system is growing in popularity all the time...
