Advice on upgrade from DS220+

Hi all,

I've been running a DS220+ for a while now, and storage wise I'm ok (8TB is enough for me) and the ability to connect 2 network lines to my router is great as I've got 1gbps fibre at home.

I do however run a lot of Docker containers for general life for me and the other half. They appear to be slowing down the system, eating memory up and continually spinning the drives. The list of containers is below.

I think the time is here to upgrade but I need some advice.

Should I go HDD or SSD or HDD with some sort of cache option (I think there is one?) and based on the below, expanding list of containers, how much 'oomph' do I need memory and CPU wise? I'll likely just bump the storage to 12TB at the same time.

Suggestions on what Synology model and options (both "full power" and "sensibly purchasable") most welcome!

Current list of containers I'm running:
Glutun + Deluge
Emby
Zipline
Sparky Fitness
Mattermost
Libre office
MeTube
Dawarich
SearXNG
Vikunja
Portainer
Vault Warden
Invidious
Bento PDF
ConvertX
Joplin
Linkwarden
Grocy
Surmai
Kaneo
Plus all the needed PHP, MariaDB etc.

Thanks all!

If you haven't updated the RAM, that might be the main performance issue. I would certainly look in that direction as well as maybe boost with SSDs. HDD+cache will help, but going with SSDs will be better for sure.

I have a few all-SSD boxes, and they perform very well for similar tasks with older CPUs, but with 12-16GB of RAM.

So imho, that would be the way to go if you are sticking with that model. If you are looking to upgrade, the DS model with an AMD CPU and 4-8GB of RAM will be more than enough for those apps and platforms.

Thanks. When you say "the DS model with AMD" - which one is that, having a hard time figuring out all the configs on Synology's website!

I'll agree with Rusty that adding RAM to your 220+ could give you a performance boost with all of the containers you are running.

If you do choose to replace/upgrade - consider both your short and long term storage needs (think 3-5 years) when deciding on a replacement model.

SSD's are definitely much faster than spindle drive, but spindles still offer more storage at lesser cost. Note that drive prices have jumped up quite a bit lately across the board...
