Like I said before….. And say yet again! :

If you have a NAS that is working fine now……
Buy a spare power supply, before Synology stops selling them!
Or, in my case: 718+ & 720+’s: eBay sells supplies with higher current ratings that plug right in! Let them eat the neutered devices!

Shades of H265, and probably Video Station!

So, whats the brand to shop for nowadays if you're going for a new NAS, that has something similar to SHR? UGreen doesn't as far as I know. Terramaster seems to have something like that?

Pretty sad to see what Synology are doing to their brand... Obviously home and media users are no longer on their priority list.

This direction of Synology is really making me think what future steps I will take. I like some of the network services provided by DSM, such as: for my fairly simple requirements I can run secure reverse proxies without having to continually manage certificates and patching. Also, a simple local DNS service.

I can see a small dual LAN DSM NAS being a front-end proxy and then use a separate device for Plex server. The NAS part could be DSM NAS or might then be another NAS brand with faster LAN ports. When I next replace the Mac Mini M1 1TB 10GbE I was thinking that it would do well as the Plex server.

The storage in a BeeStation just isn't enough to make it a Plex server, for me. So when the DS1520+ needs replacing then I'm currently thinking I would scale down the Synology use but probably not completely eliminating it.

I don’t quite understand some of the reporting.

1. Many titles say J4125. ⁠Is Synology stopping hardware encoding GPU (or whatever) drivers only for the most recent NASs (Eg. x25+) with J4125 processor, or, all J4125 NASs including earlier ones like 423+?
2. ⁠Also I keep reading stuff Incl. here with h264 and h265 lumped together. I thought h264 is not affected as it has no Synology licensing costs. What am I missing?

1. Only on the x25 (and later) models that have a J4125 CPU.
2. They removed the HEVC codec.
