As the second quarter moves along and the summer is in full swing, Synology has another RS model refresh ready with imminent release. Following the 1U RS826+/RP+ model back in June, this time around, we will get a somewhat anticipated 8-bay model. This particular 8-bay 2U model was not refreshed since its predecessor back in 2020, the RS1221+. Well, looks like the time has arrived, and while it has almost no changes compared to the previous model, the new RS1226RP+ was, in fact, updated on several fronts.

The new RS1226RP+ with an identical front look, offers a few upgrades compared to its predecessor

Let's mention the usual hardware suspects out of the way first. The CPU and RAM remain identical to the previous model with a well-known, quad-core AMD Ryzen V1500B, and 4GB of DDR4 ECC memory. The total number of RAM slots remains at two, with a maximum capacity of 32GB of supported memory.

Not sure why tbh. Considering how long you were waiting for the x21 successor, I though you would be off the platform by now?

Not sure if this model and its hw came as a surprise or not, but personally, I was right on the money. This is just a “standard” 8bay NAS in a rack version. Seeing as how the DS lineup was refreshed last year, this particular update is right up there.

Still, this is the company’s MO, a known fact that will not change any time soon, if ever.

It got some nice things comparing to RS1221+ (like NVMe slots) but still 2.5Gbit is not enough speed (should be dual 10Gb or at least 2.5/10Gb) and it got one worse "update" = able to use only overpriced Synology drives while RS1221+/RP can use any brand drives.. Like drives aren't expensive enough nowadays , possible buyers now need to buy even more expensive "Synology" drives .

But as Rusty says by now we know their MO and it looks like it's not gonna change anytime soon so we can only adapt to that or move away from them :/.
It was good run (cca 14-15 years for me) while it lasted .

Nah, just waiting on my 1221 support to end or for it to bite the dust.

They are very confusing. After all the outrage they reversed course on non Synology’s drives in 2025, only to try a stealth re-do in 2026 with 7.4.

I disagree it was their MO @Rusty. For far longer they were friendly to the enthusiast, and then in 2025 when they went astray, they apparently reversed course. Only now to double down on their hostile view of enthusiasts. Takes time to digest this and make plans to orderly move away.

They may succeed this time in getting less backlash only because many of its earlier decries have left, and others of us are fatigued with their anti consumer antics over the last year, while others are not fully aware, and/or haven’t fully digested this latest betrayal of their roots.
