DS223j to DS225+ Upgrade

My primary NAS is a 1520+ with a DX517 extension. But because of noise and heat, I do not run it on a full schedule.

I added a DS223j with 2x 10TB Hitachi Enterprise drives, and am impressed and happy with it as a simple workhorse for file sharing, interim backups, and cloud downloads/sync. However, it can be slow at times, and the 1 Gbps Ethernet is a drawback. I have 2TB fiber and a 10Gbps Ethernet backbone.

I am considering upgrading to a DS225+.

• Does it allow third-party drives with DSM 7.3.1?
• Can I swap the drives to the new unit, or do I have to back up, wipe, reinstall, and restore?

Yes, to both questions... but consider the UNAS Pro. 10GbE, 7 slots, under 500 USD.

That said, the drive policy could revert in the future, as this is a temporary measure, though I'm near certain (nothing is certain with Synology) that existing setups will be grandfathered.

Thank you. I am very happy with DSM overall, and want to keep it simple.
Synology can be annoying, but I prefer the OS.

I noticed the DS225+ is not listed in the release notes for 7.3 & 7.3.1. Is this just a Synology oversight?

225+ does support 7.3.x

According to its release notes, the Migration Assistant does not work between "j: and "+" models.

Has anybody seen anything different?

I received the DS225+ today, and migration was painless. I noted drive #1 (on the top of the DS223j) and #2, and inserted them into the matching slots on the DS225+. I powered it up and found it with the Synology web tool.
It asked whether to migrate. The process took about 15 minutes. After rebooting, a few packages needed updating.
I have ordered some RAM to run some VMs. Its performance should be the same as my DS1520+
There was no dialog about third-party drives. They were simply accepted.

This is harmless but useless for your unit. The drives contain all info for pool assembly. You can shuffle the drives around (powered off, of course) without harm.

Thanks! I've just done the same migration - no problem. You gave me the courage to do it!
BTW I added one step - after powering off the DS223j and before powering up the DS225+, I've manually changed the MAC address of the DHCP row in my router, so the new one will get the same IP address.
