Manually upgrading ds216J from DSM 7.1xxxx to 7.2

DS216J
Hi

I am very new to Synology and spent a long time gatting all my data onto it from a variety of USB disks

My ds216j is running DSM 7.1 something and I just got an email from Synology about secrutiy flaws discovered at some convention that is mitigated at best by upgrading to 7.2

My NAS is reporting that 7.1x IS the latest version it can automatically download and install and I can do it manually

COuple of questions ...

(1) If I do this (and I see that there is a sequence in that you have to install one .pat file before the other) but will this upgrade change any settings or configurations or files or shares or anything else?

(2) Once it has upgraded to 7.2 my assumption is that the auto checking for latest versions will become automatic again

Many thanks

No it won't. DSM 7.2 is a manual update to any device older then x19 models, so that is the reason you are doing this manually.

Once you get onto 7.2 any future updates will also remain in manual mode.

There are some major changes in functionality with DSM 7.2 for certain cases and/or apps/packages. Be sure to read the release notes before going down this road.

However, even with those changes, dsm will not make changes to your settings, configurations or files/shares. Again, read the notes (all of them) to be certain what changes are coming with each update.

That's also mentioned in the Release Notes:

The PWN2OWN 2024 vulnerabilities have been addressed for DSM 7.2. I noticed that DSM 7.1 fixes will be forthcoming later.

Synology_SA_24_20 | Synology Inc.. Published on 5th Nov, updated 11th. So hopefully my DS215j will get updated by early December. If you have minimal Internet exposure then waiting will probably be ok. Otherwise, go to 7.2.2 but you will lose Video Station.
Updates of DSM 7.2.1, DSM 7.1 and DSMUC 3.1 will be published within 30 days.
