Tailscale on NAS

I'm considering setting up TailScale on my network. So far I've set it up on the NAS (not fully configured yet), Apple Mac and iPhone.

The dashboard shows all three devices so I must be doing something right.

Concerns / Issues:
  • Following this tutorial, seems rather scary, to do a full installation including warnings of getting locked out of the NAS. I think this is needed though to set the NAS as an exirt node for my Tailnet?
  • After having set it to run as a VPN on my iPhone (instead of AdGuard VPN), I've hit an issue. Sites like IMGR.COM which are geoblocked in the UK, no longer open. If I switch back to using the AdGuard VPN they can be opened. I've tried changing TailScale DNS to CloudFlare or Quad9 (used in the browser on the Mac which works) and it doesn't help. Any ideas? If I can't get around that then it's not very useful for me.
  • I can only reach the NAS logon page (from the iPhone) if I set the DNS back to using Tailscale, CloudFlare or Quad9 don't work.
Any thought appreciated guys, deciding whether to proceed or not.

It looks like I can't get around the geoblocking issue. So on the mobile devices I'll use AdGuard VPN for general 'work', but if I need to access the NAS when on holiday etc I'll switch to Tailscape.

That is viable I think and has no concern about affecting the NAS.

I may well add the script to make sure that Tailscape is running though.

Exit node on NAS is optional. I use it so it gives me a VPN to traverse public hotspots, and exits from my home ISP.
Hi Telos, by coincidence , after talking with one of my sons (he wants me to dump Nordvpn and just us Mullvad cause it works fast for his gaming needs ) . The thing is I just re-newed Nord because my Synology uses Openvpn and Nord has a EASY way to set it up in Synology and has been working for years .

I came across a video on Tailscape , I installed it on the Synology and my Samsung phone, I was able to connect to the NAS instantly . nice . I was wondering if I can set up a exit node ? on the Synology and have the apps inside the Synology go out into the internet via the VPN made by tailscale.

do you have a link or video how to set up a exit node to do that ?

much appreciate your time
Best Regards

It's relatively straightforward. SSH into your Synology and run below command as root user.

sudo tailscale up --advertise-exit-node --advertise-routes=192.168.1.0/24

Replace 192.168.1.0 with your LAN subnet.

Then, log into your Tailscale account. Locate your NAS among your devices, and click on the 3 dots:

And select Edit Route settings:

Select "Use as exit node" and save:

That's it. When you use your client device, select the NAS exit node.
