I am moving in 7 days to a new much larger house.

My current setup has an ONT in my living room, directly connected to the Synology RT6600AX router WAN port. The Linux home server is inside the TV unit and connects to the router LAN port via ethernet as does TV. All works brilliantly.

My new house has the ONT installed in the garage in a recessed box in the wall with doors.

Ethernet cables go from ONT box to every room in the house. I want to be able to use these at least for the bedrooms for my kids who do gaming.

My options seem to be

1) Simple. Mount the RT6600AX in the garage on the wall above the ONT box (I don't think it would fit inside). Run 2 ethernet cables to it, WAN one from ONT and LAN one from switch in ONT box. Connect all ethernet cables to the switch.
2) Complex. Using 2 managed switches and VLANs, put RT2600AC in a more centrally located room (e.g. Living Room) with single ethernet cable for both WAN and LAN connections on a trunk port uplink between the two managed switches.

Would the RT6600AX work with the WAN link going through managed switches on a VLAN? The router would have two cables to the switch, WAN and LAN, so I feel like it should work.

Welcome to the forum!

1) Simple.
true and tested, will work for sure

2) Complex.
Same as 1. Sounds "complex" but it is effetivly the same setup just with an added switch (+1), and the fact both are managed. In terms of VLANs and 6600 talking to them, you will have no issues as well as long as the port config on the switches will be configured to pass all vlanIDs (or at least the ID that will be used by the WAN port.

The issue with the WAN port (for all Syno routers) is that if you will need to change the VID on them it will also affect the LAN1/WAN2 port (if that port is configured as WAN2) so keep that in mind. This is just in case that the ISP on their end require you to change the VID for the WAN port. Apart from that, the second scenario also seems like a solution that should work just fine.

Cheers for that. The ISP requires VLAN ID 10.

Going over the floor plan, the garage location isn't as bad as I thought - the worst distance is my son's bedroom but he'll have ethernet for his gaming PC so that's not really an issue.

I'm very happy with the router btw - its been rock solid and the parental controls are excellent.
