Is there gonna be a DSM 8?

What do you think? As far as I know DSM versions have never reached higher than .2 and then they've bumped the versionnumer alot. Do you think we'll see DSM 8 soon? Will it require Synology branded drives to be installed? I'm hoping to see some killer features for homeconsumers (whatever that might be..), DSM 7.2 wasn't very exciting to be honest.

If they're going for Synology-branded drives requirement for DSM8

My understanding is that Synology no longer tests 3rd-party drives. Synology's requirements for Compatibility List inclusion are available to drive manufacturers, who must then validate their hardware against Synology requirements.

Since Synology has introduced their own branded drives (which come from these same producers), there is little incentive for OEMs to qualify their drives. Even so, they would require Synology firmware, and that's unlikely as it could impact the existing markets for their NAS drives (imagine installing Seagate IW drives with Synology firmware on other NAS).

That means that 3rd-party drives bearing Synology labels will represent the vast majority (maybe all) of approved drives.

It's a new era. Embrace it or not.

X18 and older will not be officially supported. The x19 I am still not sure, but the x20 and newer will be.

My gut tells me that x19 will also get the axe but I do not have a confirmed info just yet.

Let’s keep in mind that all this is still susceptible to change by the official release. The beta release notes will tell us with 95% probability how the final feature and NAS compatibility matrix will look like.

Correct. Onboarding of 3rd party vendors is still under way but certain vendors will not comply with the new policy (expected tbh). Who will make the cut and with what exact models, remains to be seen.

Anyone not considering using syno drives should turn to other NAS brands as this is now a new path for the company and they are staying the course.

So to be very clear.

It's NOT just having the drive manufacturers jump through whatever insulting stupid hoops to "certify" their drives work well.

But in ADDITION they require that the manufacturers add a SPECIAL SYNOLOGY FIRMWARE to their drives to be certified? Am I understanding this correctly!?!? If true, these imbeciles have lost their minds. If I were any of the big drive makers I'd tell them to go pound sand. Insanity.

So I guess I'm Gonna stay here (As I have a 718+ with plenty of cpu & ram horsepower left.... And it uses: Non-Synology drives.. Without any "Issue"!)

Now I could actually get Behind this IF, like my old 215J, IF: The 718+ NAS was Tired, Slow, or Out of Processing/Ram power.... or just Couldn't Keep UP!!! My 215J was given away because it could No Longer Do the workload I had previously assigned to it, before the V6 upgrades limited the ability to do work...... BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!! The 718+ has Plenty of Workload power Left to give!!! My Workload is not limited whatsoever!!!!

My Guess: It's another Money Grab! Shades of Phillips, Quantel, Sony, Ampex... This is: So, So - Sad!
Mark My Words!: Get those spare power supplies now, before they are gone, too!!!
