Hello there!

This is English speaking forum so please translate your post ASAP.

By using translate, I will take a guess that you are having issues with thumbnails on 1621+ NAS running DSM 7.2 and the latest Photos app (I think you made an error on the version side of things as Photos is currently in 1.7.1 max version but no matter).

What the issue here could be is the fact that with version 1.7 there were major changes:

Compatibility & Installation

  1. Synology Photos 1.7.0 requires DSM 7.2.2 and above.
  2. Starting with this version, you will need to install Synology Image Assistant to view HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos that are newly uploaded through the Synology Photos web portal, File Station, or SMB. Otherwise, these files may not display properly in the web portal and TV app. Nevertheless, HEIC and HEVC files uploaded or backed up through the Synology Photos mobile app are unaffected and will continue to display correctly.

Synology Image Assistant is available on computers and phones:
  • Windows/macOS: Synology Image Assistant works as a browser extension (for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari) and a desktop app*, and both must be installed. This toolkit can generate additional JPEG previews and compressed videos for HEIC, HEVC, and other less-compatible formats.
  • iOS/Android: Image Assistant is a function in the latest Synology Photos mobile app, which can resolve display issues by generating additional JPEG previews for newly added HEIC and HEVC formats, regardless of how they were uploaded.

For more information about the Synology Image Assistant toolkit, please refer to this tutorial.

*Depending on your setup, you may need to update to Windows 11 version 22H2 or purchase the HEVC Video Extensions from Microsoft.
So, in order to get thumbnails visible be sure to follow the guide and changes that need to be applied depending on your client of choice.

Hello.
I just noticed that update 7.2 upgrade 3

Removes automatic thumbnail generation. Why??
my 1621+ is not a weak server so such a function should remain on / off thumbnail generation.

How is that NOT - They write that it affects DS performance

Because it is not targeted at you specifically or your model. That is just their way of saying "we want the user to take the load on their client side, so we don't have to worry about it on the server side, and we don't have to pay to h265 licencing".

So it was a corporate decision to a) remove any additional performance load from the NAS side, b) open up better option to sell their surveillance cameras that do on device decoding, c) force the user to use their end device to transcode/decode the content d) make more money in the process.

What you can do is a) live with it b) downgrade unofficially to a 7.2.1 version, c) find another solution that will handle photos/videos, d) install plugins that will help generate thumbnails in the current version/setup moving forward.

The worst thing is that we didn't have the choice of buying a license for $5 per year. I'm currently testing the current functionality of Synology with a browser add-on and a PC program - it's terribly slow despite running on an Intel i9 13900k with 64GB RAM - The program doesn't have thumbnail generation settings - it generates thumbnails properly - it sorts GPS markers with the date of execution - there's no option to turn it off - The Photos mobile app on Android creates thumbnails differently than the PC program - a different time is downloaded from the Video to the thumbnail - additionally, there's no way to force another preview on the mobile app. If I had High Density HD6500 Would I still have little power - NO - so it's better to buy an h265 license - A very bad move by Synology. I'm furious and upset because I couldn't make the decision myself because I had an active automatic NAS 1621+ upgrade installation. and now I can't undo the update. They should allow such a downgrade.

Fair point and I (we) hear you. You are about a few months late to this discussion, but you are not the only one. Unfortunately, there is little you can do, and yes, your NAS is not slow or faster because it is not able to do thumbnails. The reason is simply one of those are we stated previously.

Another way you could solve this is to create a virtual DSM with 7.2.1 version and migrate the content there inside a new Photos instance. Then you can use that instance for this task while utilizing methods that you used before 7.2.2. Just an idea. Ofc, its not ideal as you will have to spend more NAS resources on it.

Another option would be to find a Docker alternative to Photos, and start fresh. 3rd party platforms are not affected by this change so that is also another option with some additional effort.

I use the Photos functionality for weddings and other events of this type - the season in Poland is from April to October, so I missed it, but the automatic update ruined everything.
On the other hand, there should be an option or an additional paid mini application from Synology to generate thumbnails. I have another NAS Synology server with version 7.1, but very weak because DS120 with 1 disk - and I can compare the functionality of automatic generation on Synology PHOTOS and on the application on PC with a browser. I am literally testing and checking now.
As I mentioned, despite the high power of the i9 13900K CPU, it is very slow - slower than DS120 - additionally, the generated thumbnails on PC do not refresh automatically in the Synology Photos application - you have to refresh the browser to display the thumbnails - in DS120, the thumbnails refresh automatically and replace without the need to refresh the browser.
I am considering referring the matter to the Legal Adviser in this matter - that without my express consent they are disabling such a serious functionality. I will talk to the Company's legal department.

Therefore it's always a bad idea to automatic update, better is to let you notify when there is an update so, you have the change to read the Release Note first and then decide to update or not.

Good luck with that because, you could have know that........

By the way, they are definitely not going to ask every customer for explicit permission.
