Synology DSM 7.4 and AI future

It has been eight months since Synology released a new version of DSM, not including incremental updates that came after October 2025.

Now, following the Computex 2026 expo, we have info on the upcoming new DSM 7.4 that should arrive starting mid June all the way till mid August, as well as some updates on the productivity packages.

Did I misread...

As we can see, no model below X21 is listed

Yet it appears, no model below X22 is listed.

As well, deduplication and compression comes with a huge caveat:

applies only to data saved after the changes. Existing data will not be affected.

Apparently these features have little impact apart from new installations.

Of course as many users store media, such content will have negligible, if any benefit from these features.

Well I guess my 718+ will have company with both 720+’s. I guess all will remain at 7.3.x
Prior to this 718+ replied 7.3 would be last, but 720+ didn’t.

I guess that’s ok. I’d rather have a snappily running NAS at EOL, that still does a good amount of work.. I went through a slow overloaded NAS with 6.2 & 215J, and that wasn’t at all fun! So I’ll adapt! The brief discussion of 7.4 features isn’t going to be that helpful to me anyway (many saves of video edit, DVD, BR projects).

Another business driven feature combined with Tiering.

There should be multiple x21 on the list

That was a lot different as the hw in those models compared to DSM5/6 was severely underpowered, but yes, moving to 7.4 is intended for new models and post-Covid ones in general ;)

Just re-read the 7.4 stuff. July!!
Oh my! A day or 2 after Last TP was released I pointed out an issue with it - that Support confirmed and software guys installed patches on 2x of my 3 2600’s. The software fix - 2 different versions were tested on my 2600’s about 3 months ago. The patches work! Was originally asked to keep one 2600 unpatched for ‘release test’. The fix was to be distributed but then wasn’t. “Map issue” When I asked when would TP fix be released, I was told: “Early July!”..
Oh my! You think it will wait until 7.4? When I then can’t use it?

So, my high level take on this is that Synology have run out of ideas to innovate and expect customers to prop up their failing walled garden business strategy by expecting customers to unnecessarily upgrade their hardware every 5 years. Never going to happen. I shall continue weaning myself off their platform.

Orbit & Pig712:
I suspect you are both correct. With all the Feature requests being submitted over the years - you might think some new feature would have transpired.
But Again: I’d prefer an EOL Unit that still can accomplish the workload I’ve asked it to do, with workload to spare, over what my 215J did shortly before EOL: Fell on it’s face!! Though under a far-far less workload than I had ever asked it to do, Son-in-law still is using the 215J, so the design was decent even if hardware was weak.
Sure hope the TP patch gets released for 7.3.x, though!

I can’t believe in that.. That would make me be as much a negative person as what I assume others are.
Back at work, I occasionally got good ideas from even the most impossible to keep in line employees. “ Out of the mouths of babes!” When passed back to MFG’s: A few were adopted in firmware updates, and all benefited by the suggestion. Guess it matters if MFG listens or not. Good MFG’s do listen. You gotta assume mfg is good, or nothing improves. Some didn’t listen, and that just became another nail in coffin. I could name many broadcast companies that stopped listening, and disappeared. Why I never stopped making suggestions.

Storage efficiency works at the Shared folder level using Synology HDD drives.
If that information is correct, I wonder if Synology will ever learn from their past?

You mean the recent past, where they made almost a billion year-to-year since they started selling their drives, vs supporting 3rd party? Yes, they did learn. The fact is that all this "enthusiast" range is close to nothing in earnings compared to the business and high range. So, pushing forward, Synology drives will be advertised as the best in the world, whether we like it or not.

you meant "$ynology (rebranded third party drive$ with proprietary firmware) will be adverti$ed a$ the be$t in the world, whether we like it or not...."

You’d think if they wanted us to have data savings capability -/ they would have kept H265. Instead of having to purchase new drives of a certain type.
