Docker to Container Manager migration

DS218+
I have a DS218+, 10GB RAM, running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 9. I understand that I need to manually update to DSM 7.3.1.

The notes say that Docker is no longer supported and that I need to move to Container Manager.

I thought I would install Container Manager and migrate that first, then upgrade DSM. However, I don't see Container Manager in Package Center...

Am I in a catch-22 situation?

Thanks!

Container Manager is a DSM 7.2.x package, which is why you don't see it. There is no fear, just update to 7.3.1, and Docker will update from 20.10.x version to the current 24.x.x

Hi, I am in a similar situation - need to update my DSM, but mine is even older. I need to go from DSM 6.2.4-2556 to 7.3.1-86003 (with the step between - as described at the official Synology download page - DSM 7.0.1-42218).

My question is: will all containers running in the old Docker (in DSM 6.2.4) survive the whole update process to DSM 7.3.1 with Container Manager and will work as previously? Especially two or three of them are essential for me: Vaultwarden, Baserow, Portainer.

Thanks for any advice or steps that I need to make before the update process.

They will. The Docket to Container Manager transition is mainly the UI update and Docker engine update from archaic 20.10 to already out of support 24.x. From a functional standpoint all will be well.

Ofc backup is recommended in any case.

Thank.
If speaking about backup - export settings of every container and then - if needed - import it again in a new Container Manager (plus HyperBackup of my "docker" shared folder) will be enough? Or is it also about the whole container fresh installation and after this I can import the container settings? Just asking to be sure.

Exactly that. Settings/compose, plus volume content should be enough.

Just to note the difference between the old Docker package and Container Manager: in Docker you can stop and tweak the container configuration, often needed a clean action to get all changes pushed through (clean: they changed the button name somewhere along the way).

In Container Manager you have to duplicate the container and make your changes. So you have to be more precise or this is a longer process. But then you can start using compose scripts in Projects. You can stop the project and edit the script, then it offers to rebuild for you. It also has some syntax checking.
