Synology DSM 7.4 and AI future

It has been eight months since Synology released a new version of DSM, not including incremental updates that came after October 2025.

Now, following the Computex 2026 expo, we have info on the upcoming new DSM 7.4 that should arrive starting mid June all the way till mid August, as well as some updates on the productivity packages.

If I read this right, then your 918+ Rusty will also be available to upgrade???
May I then ask of you, Rusty, to do a comparison of workload and speed of your system before at 7.3.2-x and after with 7.4 with your personal feelings about the loading of the System by 7.4, and workload, Please? I greatly respect your comments, and that might be very helpful for us with 18+ and such! Thank You!

Will do. So far I have only updated the virtual one, and I see no penalty so far in terms of utilization. The X18 stack will have to wait for a bit (a week at least) before pushing it, so by then I'm sure others will report their experience with 7.4.

Nothing in the release notes about “storage efficiency”. Did Synology scam us? Seems as v7.4 is a patch, not an update.

I successfully cross-upgraded my 32-bit DS715 to DS1517 by DSM 7.4 today.

As always, the DiskStation runs faster after an update. This speed boost is made possible by PHP 8.4, for the DSM GUI, for instance. However, I was still able to install PHP 7.4, MailServer and VideoStation/Codec-Pack, so it’s not the end of the road for Synology units just yet.

After the installation, for me a number of unnecessary packages could once again be removed to declutter the system:
Bash:
synopkg uninstall ActiveInsight
synopkg uninstall DhcpServer
synopkg uninstall OAuthService
synopkg uninstall ScsiTarget
synopkg uninstall SecureSignIn
synopkg uninstall SupportService
synopkg uninstall SynoAnalytics
synopkg uninstall SynoFinder
synopkg uninstall SynoOnlinePack_v2

More like a new base line, but incremental updates will add features over time.

@Telos

Considering that SE has a strict compatibility list, I won't test it any time soon, as I have only a few production units that check all the boxes, but then again, not being in the release notes, it's safe to say that it is still coming:

Storage efficiency recap:

  • including data deduplication, compression, and both as configurable options
  • compatible with Synology HDDs
  • can be enabled by Shared Folder
  • supported models = supported models for SSD dedupe + models with the following conditions:
    -> launched after 2022
    -> Kernel ≥ 4.4, CPU ≥ 4 threads, RAM ≥ 2G
In terms of supported models that support the new feature, the current list is as follows:

Is it constrained to newly created shared folders (or new content within existing folders)... such as "data integrity"
Excellent question. Guess we will see. These are Synology notes with no real testing from my end as off yet.

When I deploy it on one of my PROD machines I will test this out for sure.
