Synology DSM 7.4 and AI future

It has been eight months since Synology released a new version of DSM, not including incremental updates that came after October 2025.

Now, following the Computex 2026 expo, we have info on the upcoming new DSM 7.4 that should arrive starting mid June all the way till mid August, as well as some updates on the productivity packages.

tnx but not sure why you are pointing this our on multiple posts over and over. It is a known fact that non Plus model from the RS and up range have a mandatory Syno-disk policy.

The reason for my post was due to a promise to some of the users with similar models that I would report back how the 7.4 upgrade went.

As a Synology partner I am fully aware of the limitations, and as someone who uses only Syno drives since 2020 onwards (personally and with all the clients) I sleep well without the need to worry about something working or not working.

Saying this and sounding like a dick, I do agree also that people should have all the correct info and that there is a lot of miss information out there especially coming from individuals that are bending or crossing certain lines.

The point of this forum is ofc to help out with true and tested info, so tnx again for pointing out the obvious know fact. It comes in handy to refresh certain facts from time to time.

Up until now, your statement had been linked to the x25 model year.

Perhaps an update-reporting database posted in a new thread would be helpful.

I have now deleted the redundant information, as you mentioned.

Presently, I can't say. I don't have full encrypted volume set up.

I have just configured the deduplication and compression on 8 shared folders. Two ABB folders (one for Macs and one for Windows machines) as well as 6 "bucket" folders that are used as targets for remote HB tasks.

The schedule for reclamation has been configured from midnight to 7 AM every day, so let's see over time if this will have any effect at all.

Atm this volume looks like this with space saved only from shared folder inline compression.

Don’t know if I added enough zeros on calculator.
Is that ~3%? Oh! missed greyed out numbers.

If any file was huge, and you had it stored in two places - one compressed, one uncompressed, was there an obvious difference to copy or play each? (Loading lag due to uncompression action compared to same file without compression?)
Were those drives 7200rpm, 5400rpm, or SSD?
Just nosy

7200=good. 3% for free is better than nothing, as long as un-compression is not cumbersome.

3% is actually a good yield, and once it's packed, it tends to speed up.

Well if they got that to work with little or no overhead on de-compression: Good for Them! Ask those code writers to look into Threat Prevention!!!! Would ya?

A time schedule keeps my NAS at full power when I need it and all this background operations are during backup hours anyways.

But: if you run a file that’s compressed, at a time during the day….. how much “load” does the un-compression do? That would be my only concern. I understand it’s compressed in off-hours, when unless you are burning the midnight oil…. You are not taxing the system.
Just nosy, as I don’t have drives or system to take advantage of it, but it does look “interesting”, and I’m just trying to get my head around it!😉
