Well normal “corporate speak “is banality defined. It’s actually one of the few places where using the horrendous tech generated by AI engines makes sense, because it can match that same level of banality.

But I think this “private cloud AI“ that they tout is misleading. Because they’re not running an AI engine on your local Synology. You’re running an app on your local Synology that reaches out to the cloud for AI help, isn’t that right?

And I think it touches on what your excellent point is, in another thread, why would I trust The cloud when the entire point of me having a Synology is not to be on the cloud and to have my own private cloud. You would need a lot more horsepower than what Synology builds into their NAS currently to be able to do it all locally. Frankly, the only machine I know of that has the horsepower to even try to do something like this is Apple‘s mac studio with half a terabyte of RAM to run a full LLM engine locally.

What I really want to know is can I turn this AI stuff off. Because I want nothing to do with it. I don’t want my Synology pumping my data off to some cloud AI to get some Banal text back. I hope they allow you to switch it off so the software stays local. If not, I may want to freeze updates because I want nothing to do with that garbage

Not if you have a local LLM running. You can point it towards it and have it all "in-house".

I hope they allow you to switch it off so the software stays local

The AI console needs to be configured first and then activated on a per-app basis to be usable in a predetermined package. Apart from that, it does nothing. Oddly, it is part of a mandatory install with, let's say, Office, but even so, until you configure it, it's useless.

Might also be called 'roadmap'. But I recalled @Rusty mentioned it was a coming feature in v1.2, while not beinghere in the current version. Took some remembering where that was posted!

Even so, for now the AI Console, while mandatory for some packages, seems to be a standardised external module for these packages rather than embed the code multiple times. It then is up to the administrator to decide whether to enable AI features through the selection and linking to an external AI service.

But until then people who need/want to use local or private LLMs the answer is to not enable use of a public LLM.
