Question DS412+ not booting: serial console shows EFI Internal Shell missing boot devices, but EFI partition on internal storage seems intact

Last edited:
If you think about it. NAS's are very simple small form factor PC's. Or SFF pc's. The eDOM or also called eFlash, or eUSB in the big tech realm, is the NAS's boot drive. Same as you putting Windows, Linux, or Mac OS on your PC drive. In fact Synology DSM OS is a form of Linux. And has very limited command structure, and even BUSYBOX commands some Linux guys will know how they work. Very limited. Its alot smaller then a full blown OS. Because it doesn't have as alot to do as much as a PC does. Its more the equal to a older Android smart phone back 8 years ago. That's its equal. Even the latest 2026 NAS's. are about that as well. Just they run a lil faster, and do a couple more extra things. That's it. But basically. All Synology NAS's run the exact same DSM. The size even of the Boot OS is almost the same size for all. Like 120meg, or 128meg. Depending on model and year. So that's the size of the NAS OS boot you have. Just either Synology has limited serial numbers to only go to DSM 6 as the latest they can use. And not compete with newer models. And they added a few extra tid bits in the OS for newer models. But basically the same. Like Windows. Windows core elements are the same since the 80's. Just they keep adding a little bit more to it. To make it better. But its core hasn't changed since. And it still has DOS in it since the 80's. I even remember when DOS 1.0 came out. Even though I was more of a Commodore guy. But by the time DOS 3.0 came out I was hooked. Also invested alot in stocks with the company(MS), and Apple. As I was with IBM at that time working on Large Systems(mainframes). And it was starting to lose alot. And DOS was growing really big. And Apple. Why I really retired at 40. I just like Synology NAS's the past 13 years. And I like fixing them and engineer ideas for fixes on them. Like the 100ohm and Transistor fix 11 years ago. The Coincell tricks just 3 years ago and more. 100ohm?That's another long story. Synology can be a greedy company in that story. LOL!

By the way there is a secret that works sometimes with this issue you can do. Heat the edom and see if the pc sees it. If not. Cool it in the fridge for 10 mins, and then see id it sees it. 90% will read with this done. But you have to move fast before the temp settles on the eDom. Or its controller will drop off again.
I pretty much created all this here for you guys. Long ago.
So you can also for this. But you need a copy of you edom you stored somewhere. Or that you got it off you edom now.
You can use a plain old USB thumb drive to do the same. See pic how to and read below.
You will laugh, but this what I do time to time with my DNS-320L. Sometimes it does not boot up. I remove HDDs and put NAS i fridge for half an hour. And guess what! It come buck to life :)

In principle, you're right, but in detail, it's not comparable. Windows has nothing to do with Linux. The Sun is also fundamentally unchanged, but still not comparable to Synology ;-) It's about whether you can do it, and whether you want to. Microsoft can't, and Synology doesn't want to offer a better solution. Therefore, the problems are fundamental and affect all the expensive "Plus" models. You don't even need a PC. For repairs, you only need a USB stick with manufacturer software available to change the IDs. Synology tells me about the failure of my RS3619xs+: "...buy a new device... we don't offer spare parts..." So, they don't want to help there either.
I especially miss a backup that restores the backup state 100%, like we know from OS/400 or i5OS, for example. Synology doesn't offer anything like that, but it's still expensive. I find that quite embarrassing. Therefore, I'm now running DSM in Docker, and I don't have to invest a single cent more. But I still have full fun and stability.

Yes. Electronics is a funny thing. That is a old school trick for hot and cold to get it to work. I have eDOMs here when I get them. That only run in either hot, and some cold only. So when I'm ready to copy them. Wife's blow drier is here. And a can of freeze spray. So when it starts to slow down. It either gets the spray, or some heat to get it back up to speed. LOL! Sometimes I have to do it many times. But I get desperate to get that copy off. Because I can make new one easily. But if customers did not backup the config files on the NAS's. Its like a new NAS again where install time is there.. And I hate to give them a fixed NAS where they have to install the DSM again. LOL! Saves alot of headaches. For both of us. And if you get a good copy. Owners can just plug in the eDOM or if they want a USB drive. And there is the old DSM, and all the same logins, drive structures, and IP setups. So always good to backup the config file everyone should do.

Unfortunately, hardware settings don't make for a perfect summer. If only it were that simple.

I never said Linux and Windows was comparable. This was only a setup for you to think and piece together. So a part of the SUN still lives in Synology OS. In fact 90% of the SUN is in it. I work in Syno OS all day. So I know how much Linux is in it. As the only Synology service center in the USA. And what you said has some wrong and alot right. The 3619 is easily fixable. Many times with this model its not the eDOM. Very rare for it to fail. Its always the bios on this one. And a new bios is a sure fix. Only if yours is a blue blinking light only. This unit also has a drive recognition problem. And that is fixable easily with a chip change. Its very very rare for this model to fail. I have only seen 3 here in the past 10 years.

By the way guys. Synology does not want NAS's fixed. I am an enemy. But cordially. As we work together, ,and when saving them from disaster on the C2000 fix. Is my only string. But they are greedy. No money made for them fixing NAS's. Investors like to see profits. And why fixing out of warranty is bad business for them. But saves you. They don't care about customers for some reason. Though they use to. Even out of warranty they would replace like 5 years ago. But now. One day past the warranty. Get a new one they say. Since COVID. Alot changed. DSM7 was the onset of change to their apps now. Instead of third party royalties to pay. They are tightening the belt on money. LOL!

Hard to believe. But all posts in this forum are usually on the newer things. But I honestly think this post is the most popular. LOL! Or I could be wrong. But it is always the most active. LOL!

I've dealt with many of these outages in Europe. In 95% of cases, it's due to hardware problems with the Synology DoM.

I also had my own DS412+ and RS818+ units that experienced the same issue. So, three times with a single customer!

Maybe the case you ran into. And they have bad power AC filtering on the 220v network. Like for the 818+. But when you see 100's of these annually. Its a different story. The 818+ rack always gets burnt U50 U43, and i forgot the name of the other one. And the PSU's in them I upgrade to 200watt. On 412. It can happen if the eDOM is already very weak after a decades of use. With that I will agree. Like 412. Yea. That is in use alot! In fact I see some run 24/7/365. And they never boot again after running for 10 years. And the owner powers it down. As the eDom dies in it. But is in memory until the NAS powers down and needs to be reloaded on every boot.

By the way. I am not one to say I am the best at this or that. I never boast about myself. I only say certain things, because I know what I am talking about when it comes to Synology. My partner in Germany as well. I cover the Americas, and Ring of Fire. He does the rest. And we see the trend analysis of fixes when so many come in. My suggestions in fixes spread like wildfire, when someone says "you saved me $1500. Thank You sooo much". Those posts fixes spread all over the web in one day, and in every forum that relates to Synology on the web. And then people know what a eDOM is. Or PID/VID F400, USB bootable NAS's. Or USB over eDOM. That's new actually I just put out a 8 months ago and how to do it. Convert 12 series to 13 series and 13 series to 15. Alot of me out there. My background I am a real E. Engineer. And was a Compliance Engineer for may big companies. Working with U.L. And Synology I know in my sleep. Why I will try and help you best I can. But if you get time. You will find me online. And all the posts about me. synology_service. Why I was thinking to build a support post here for fixes in synoforum.
Like do Column related Posts for each model. Even up to 2025 models. And including iOsafe. As those are Synology too many don't know about. I get those alot too. LOL! What a beast to work on. LOL! If you ever dealt with iOsafe. You'll know what I mean. LOL!
