SHR (without data protection) to Raid1

Short time lurker, first time poster - I currently have a DS224+ with 2 different drives set up as 2 different volumes. I want to change this to a RAID1, and ordered another 16TB drive (my current 2nd, and largest, drive) - what is the best way to migrate this? I haven't seen an obvious...

DSM 7.2 DS918+ Raid1 to SHR conversion method

Hey, Im looking for advice on migrating from raid1 to SHR. I currently have 2x14tb in my ds918+ running as raid 1. Im wanting to add a further 2x20tb but in an SHR setup. What is the best method to migrate over to this. Heres what im thinking. Create a new pool as SHR, add 20tb HDD's, copy all...

    SHR vs JBOD, drive health

Reading/writing files to a JBOD setup instead of SHR, wouldn't that cause less disk I/O than on a SHR setup cause a file actually has a "home drive" rather than all of them on a SHR-setup? Hope you get what I mean..

SHR or JBOD, that's the question

I'm on my way reinstalling my DS923+. I'm so tired of all noises related to my harddrives (the NAS is located very close to my computer) so I think I'm about to go all SSD. However I can't really decide how to proceed here so I'm after some useful ideas and hints. I see three alternatives: JBOD...

Disk space recovery on SHR volume

I'm running a DS162+ with 6 each 16TB drives, using SHR for data protection for 1 disk failure., The drives are divided into two volumes. Volume 1 is 24TB, and Volume 2 is 45TB. The system is used primarily to house my home theater content. The issue is that Volume 1 has filled up to the point...

    Disable SHR/RAID

I have two 3TB HDDs configured with SHR 1-drive fault tolerance. My volume is at 95% of the capacity, and I'd like to change to RAID 0 or SHR-1. Is it possible? DSM only offers me to change to SHR-2, but I need more drives. If I take out one drive, I shouldn't lose any data, isn't it? Can I...

    Confused about making Volumes

Hello🙂 I'm getting totally confused about making Volumes, do I need to make two volumes or just one large one. It's a 4 bay but I'm only going to be using two hard drives (14TB) to start with using SHR. I'm using the NAS for Plex and Data backup from my computer. If I should be making two...

SHR to SHR2 migration and 1 or 2 empty disk rules

I have DS1522+ (5 bay) with 4 disks. 2 x 18TB and 2 x 20TB, they are all in a single SHR1 volume right now. I am considering moving to SHR2 by buying a new disk but this note is fairly confusing to understand and Synology hasn't provided any examples: In a RAID array comprising three or more...

DSM 7.2 Migrating from SHR to RAID5 on DS1823xs+

Hey everyone, I’ve been running my DS220+ with SHR configured in RAID1. Recently, I transferred the drives to a DS1823xs+, and to my surprise, the migration went smoothly with both disks being detected without any issues. However, I’ve realised that the DS1823xs+ doesn’t support creating new...

DSM 7.1 RAID10 change to SHR

I currently have a RS820+ 4 disks in use in a RAID 10. I am looking to change this over to SHR and looking for insights on the process of getting this changed over. The plan is to HyperBackup everything over to an external hard drive. From there I will delete out the storage pool and create a...

    RAID0, RAID10, SHR - DS1821+ and DX517 Benchmarks over 10G

Hi just thought I'd post some stuff that might be of interest. Setup is a DS1821+ with 20GB RAM and Synology 10G Card (copper). Drives are WD RED 2TB SSDs or EXOS X16 16TB HDDs - 2x SSDs in RAID0 (DS and DX) - 4x HDDs in RAID10 (DS and DX) - 4x SSDs in RAID10 (DS only) - 4x SSDs in SHR...

Added a 2nd hard drive ....... selected SHR by mistake, now I have many problems.

Had a 1TB drive installed, added a 4TB drive to the second slot, selected SHR by mistake (wanted extra storage not RAID) Realised my mistake when I still only has 1TB total storage. Disabled 2nd drive and BLEEPING 'CRITICAL STATUS' + orange light on NAS. Added back 2nd drive as JBOD, created...

DS1522+ on the way – want to make sure I set it up right, buy the right additions, RAID vs SHR vs. SHR-2, etc.

I currently have a QNAP TS-451 with four 8tb drives, 4.90 TB free of 21.2 TB. This is mainly for storing media for Plex. I don’t run Plex through the QNAP, it’s my Z: on Windows 10 (soon to be 11) to store mostly media (~95%) and some personal things. Had it about 7 years and it’s getting old...

Changing SHR-2 to SHR - Backup and reinstall options or a new Syno box?

Following on from Need to increase storage - a couple of options I'm taking the hint and want to use SHR rather than SHR-2 in future. I know I can't change the RAID type but I still must have a couple of options. The obvious one is a new Disk Station, probably a DS1522+, cos I listened to...

Running SHR on DS916+ on DSM 7.2 (latest) with 4 x 8TB HDDs but ...

... I'd like to go back to no RAID so I can remove 1 x HDD as I'd like to put in an SSD for caching. No reason but I have one laying about and I'd like to play. Of course the gotcha is that I don't want to lose any of my 5TB of data. Possible? How please? Cheers, Pete

The SSD SHR has reached 41K hours

The SHR array with Samsung 850, 860 and Sandisk ultra has reached 41k hours for the oldest and 40k hours for the other SSD. The disks are around 8 years old. Happy with that, they look healthy and are still going strong. Let’s go for the next 10K!
